Without a doubt, ‘Maharani 2’ is more powerful and staggering. But it’s the cast’s compelling performances that keep you enthralled in this sequel. Shorter episodes would have made it more binge-worthy, but if you have seen the previous season, you’ll definitely be interested in this power-hungry drama again.

Yes, it is a political drama and politics should take precedence over everything else, but it would have been better if the subplots were given a little more importance. Having said that, Maharani 2 is worth binge-watching over the weekend. It is well-paced, has an engrossing storyline and some fabulous performances.

The twists and turns, revelations of political schemes play out in a dramatic manner, and are quite entertaining to watch. What is frustrating as an audience is that we do not get as much insight into Rani’s political strategies as we get of the people conspiring around her. For the longest time it seems she is also watching the puppet show as an outsider, instead of pulling the strings herself.

The show has saved itself from the curse of the second season. It is one of those few where you have to survive the first to enjoy the second and it’s rare. I am curious where this goes next, because the story now gets even more interesting.

Created by Subhash Kapoor; written by Kapoor, Nandan Singh, and Umashankar Singh; and directed by Ravindra Gautam, Maharani’s second season flings events at the broad narrative arc of a babe in the political woods — the rape and murder of a model; the cleaving off of Jharkhand from Bihar; reservation and anti-reservation protest; and communal riots. These issues aren’t resolved as much as introduced and then subsumed under the weight of the next, more pressing issue that comes up. Is this incomplete writing or a mirroring of the world which it uses liberally as source material?
