Bollywood has a plethora of sports biopics, including ’83’, ‘Saina’, ‘Soorma’, amongst others. Despite the fact that Sameer Saxena’s ‘Jaadugar’ revolves around the desire to win the inter-colony football tournament trophy. It is a relief that this film is not another biopic, but rather a romantic story with a magical twist. The film’s beauty lies in its simplicity and depiction of the protagonist’s transformation from a self-centered individual to someone filled with compassion. The narrative takes time to build up, further slowing down along the way, but not without entertaining the viewers with witty dialogues, endearing moments and some amazing magic feats.

A magician of modest standing turns into a footballer of little ability. At stake is the most important trophy of his life: the woman he loves. Given the film’s trite premise and lumbering rhythm, neither the protagonist’s half-hearted embrace of the Beautiful Game nor his well-meaning sleights of hand can prevent Jaadugar from being more messy than magical.

It breaks my heart to write this about two of my most favourite creators. I have learnt a lot about the craft from them, but this recent flick isn’t what they should be known for. Jaadugar lacks the magic and the content that makes sense or even brainlessly entertains.

Director Sameer Saxena’s drama, written by The Viral Fever’s Biswapati Sarkar is awfully ambivalent about Meenu’s character. A hotchpotch of self-centred impulses and genial persona, the makers cannot decide if they are going for a coming-of-age tone or rise of the unlikeable underdog vibe. As if dealing with Meenu’s wilful ways and bland jokes aren’t exasperating enough, Jaadugar decides its original purpose is to be a triumph-of-spirit flick about a ragtag team caught in a quintessential David versus Goliath scenario. Despite cursorily written, one-note parts, it’s the supporting cast of unknown faces that rises to the occasion, proving themselves as the real jaadugars of the show.

That the poorly sketched Disha should even begin to take Meenu seriously is presumably part of the suspension of disbelief involved in magic. Jaadugar seems keen to avoid being another film about an underdog team that aims for glory. Yet, it’s the formula that wins, and the football that sticks.
