Here’s the interesting aspect of ‘She’: when it hits the right notes, especially arming women with strength and a stern voice to call out bigots, it quickly turns into a delightful drama. But when it doesn’t—and that goes for the majority of this season—you wonder if what you just saw was meant only as a joke‘She’ is complicated and its essence is often hard to comprehend. It didn’t have to be that way though.

She had promise. The show had an interesting premise about how a woman rediscovers her identity and regains confidence, when thrown into the deep end by men around her. She has grown up being controlled by men in her life, and finally, she is breaking free. It could have been a feminist tale in the middle of crime. But the voyerism that has crept into the depiction mars its narrative. It reduces She from a show about a woman to how certain men want women to be.

Verdict: She Season 2 is an Aaditi Pohankar show all the way, much more so than it was the first time around. That, however, does not help the show break free from the limitations of the male gaze.

Created by Imtiaz Ali, SHE has come back for a longer, and ultimately tiring second season that though it has its twists and turns, cannot amount to anything other that partly salacious, partly seductive, and partly really bad.

SHE Season 2 is better than Season 1 simply because SHE is braver, bolder and more vocal about her needs and wants. Bhumi’s reins might seem to be in the hands of Nayak or Fernandez (Vishwas Kini), but this time she makes her own decisions. Both Nayak and Fernandez doubt her intentions, yet they can’t help but go by her words.
