Suzhal, as a web series, gets a lot of things right. It spends a lot of time establishing the characters in an interesting way. And hence, we understand the psyche of the characters and why they do what they do. The characters, especially Shanmugam, Regina and Sakkarai, are wonderfully grey and they propel the story forward. However, the story fizzles out mid-way once they reveal Nila’s whereabouts. After that, it is just overstretched and makes you guess the twists and turns from a mile ahead. That said, Suzhal still holds your attention for the most part.

Masoom is principally a father-daughter drama about a man who is neither a good dad nor a particularly dependable husband. It hinges on Irani’s unfussy, unshowy performance that hits the steadiest of notes in a patchy series. His is a sterling turn in a middling show.

The Web series Blood, created by Sophie Petzal, set in lush Ireland, hiding family dysfunction, poetic gloom and Catholic guilt is transported, somewhat uneasily to a sunny Falauli village in Punjab, where Dr Balraj Kapoor (Boman Irani) lives with his bed-ridden wife and three unhappy children. The performances are one-note ,but in a story where everybody has something to hide, it seems to work.

Set in a small Punjab town with the characters speaking a mix of Punjabi and Hindi, the series, just out on Disney+ Hotstar is a remake of the British show, Blood, with the Indian version penned by Satyam Tripathy. Exploring the travails of a doctor, Balraj Kapoor (Boman Irani), and his family, Masoom is mix of weaker moments as it is of stronger pulls.

All of this should have been parlayed into a taut thriller, but the result is only intermittently effective and comes off, overall, strangely bloodless. Samara Tijori, whose character sets much of the action in play, is so morose as to be single-note. ‘Masoom’ comes off serviceable, instead of memorable.

Masoom is the spirit equivalent of Sony Liv’s brilliant Tabbar, but while the latter confronted external demons in an attempt to keep the family together, Masoom is deals with the ruins within. A family where trust and dependability has evaporated to the point that all that all that remains is an air of despondence and suspicion. Set in Punjab, Masoom is deliciously wicked but doesn’t quite hit the performative brilliance of Tabbar.
