If the first stroke is half the battle, then this military drama delivers right from episode one with a thrilling sequence of a maverick fighter pilot and navigator Viraj Sehgal (Armaan Ralhan) using his prowess to prevent a jet plane collision in the heart of Pune. The show then swiftly moves to a terrorist attack on a resort, which is a segue into NSA’s Milind Phanse (Makarand Deshpande) proposing Project Hawks to plug in the gaps in intel and coordination between the Army, Navy and Air Force. Heading the project will be Group Captain (GC), Ranjan Malik (Manish Chaudhary), who will command and train the first responders’ crack unit that brings together the best of the three wings of the armed forces. This team will be away from red tapism and delays and have a single chain of command.

To begin with, Shoorveer has the right ingredients for a good thriller but might fail to attract viewers who have watched so many better and more engaging espionage thrillers. One being Special Ops, which is on the same OTT platform as Shoorveer. In parts, the series is gripping, where you see the Hawks fighting as a unit and protecting the nation, while in other places, it falls flat.

The problem is that a good series finds ways of making the lack of action or scale, palatable, almost infectious. Both Special Ops and Prime Video’s The Family Man have now done it over the span of multiple seasons. Primarily because they are led by fine actors and supported by some terrific material in the letter of the word. Here there is nothing, not a crutch, nor a sling to help clueless actors waltz past what was already a really low bar. Instead, Shoorveer dives at full tilt with no form of rescue in sight. It’s really an opportunity missed.
