Madhur Bhandarkar’s direction is routine. The narration of the ordinary and predictable story is so flat that the drama has no high points — neither in content nor in presentation. On the whole, Babli Bouncer is a very ordinary film which will not find too many takers.

And the film makes the mistake so many others have, when they have a strong woman in the lead: it turns them into a female version of the old-style hero. The climax has Babli jumping on a motorcycle and chasing a car full of abductors with a lone girl, and beating them to pulp. How many times have we seen this climax? Good to see films being made with women leading from the front. But please can they be better?

Babli Bouncer is a comeback film for her in Hindi cinema. She grabs the chance with both hands and runs with it. Her Haryanvi accent is spot on and so is the comic timing. She makes Babli entirely believable and never deviates from character. The action sequences involving her feel real and don’t look like the usual superhuman stunts seen in our films. It’s time Hindi filmmakers took notice of her talent. Tamannaah’s the best thing about the film and carries it on her shoulders. Watch the film for her natural acting and for its empowering message.

Despite the film’s title, there’s hardly any depth to Babli’s journey from a village girl to becoming a competent bouncer. We do get to see her in action, but that hardly makes up for it. In fact, the movie somehow ends up looking like a love story of sorts but without any perspective. Madhur Bhandarkar is known for coming up with strong female characters and while Tamannaah does look the part and delivers with her performance, her role is neither meaty nor inspiring. Having said that, Babli Bouncer is a decent one-time watch.

Bhandarkar seems confused as to how to bring his film to a convincing finale. He mucks up the third act with something as inane as Babli being feted by the State Chief Minister for bravery, and what began with a bang ends in a disappointing whimper. If there is an aspect that could make this Disney+Hotstar title work it is Tamaannah’s standout performance, and let us not forget Shukla’s subtle piece of acting that many of us would remember for a long time.

Babli Bouncer seems to be a product of lacklustre and lazy writing. The story is predictable from the get-go. It is difficult to understand the intentions behind Bhandarkar’s vision for Babli. On the surface, it would seem like a story of a female bouncer in the capital city, but the bubble is soon burst. The character of Babli is written poorly with no major arcs. Using a man and Babli’s desire for him as a crutch, the film makes a sorry attempt at lending it a strong female voice. When it finally tries to convey a message, it seems forced and caricaturist. For a filmmaker who has unabashedly shown the reality of showbiz, this is such a disappointment.

At the same time, he makes sure that it doesn’t turn out to be a mindless film as he raises some important points about women empowerment and their need to be independent.On the whole, BABLI BOUNCER is a decent watch due to its message, funny moments, and Tamannaah Bhatia’s superlative performance.
