On the whole, Motichoor Chaknachoor may be an entertaining fare but it is too uni-dimensional to make any mark at the box-office. Lack of promotion and, therefore, lack of awareness among the public, about the existence and release of the film will also adversely affect its box-office chances. It may actually turn out to be a debacle.

But Motichoor Chaknachoor has modest aspirations and it never soars above them because the writing isn’t strong enough. As long as the film stays breezy and jokey, it stays afloat. But when the plot takes a more serious tone, tedium sets in. Many scenes sag – I used that time to make a note of the lovely shawls the women are wearing. And the tonality shifts jarringly from slice-of-life to comedy to drama. Some of the humor is also problematic – did we really need to make an overweight girl a punchline? So the film doesn’t become memorable in the way that other small-town tales like Dum Laga Ke Haisha or Bareilly ki Barfi or Stree were. But it’s passable entertainment. And sometimes that’s enough.

However, in holding marriage as the be-all and end-all of life itself, the film keeps returning to this central theme. It’s hard to believe that a woman who walks into a jewellery shop with Rs 4 lakh in cash can’t find a way to go abroad on her own. Queen did it many years back. Pushpinder questions this desire that Ani defines as her “ambition”, asking her to go abroad on her own merit if that’s what she wants. Ambition isn’t a word one often hears in Bollywood — even Hollywood for that matter. Sure enough, they never finish that talk

The romance between the gawky hero and the garrulous heroine, which occupies a large chunk of the first half, is numbingly insipid. But that isn’t the worst part of the film. When the duo struggles to settle into domesticity, the film turns even more wearisome, leaving Siddiqui to scamper around in a bid to clean up the mess without any support from the script or the rest of the cast. Give Motichoor Chaknachoor a miss if you value your time – and sanity.

All said and done, Motichoor Chaknachoor follows the formula of films like Badhaai Ho, Bareilly Ki Barfi & Dream Girl but misses the most important element they had – strong humour.

Motichoor Chaknachoor tries to capitalize on the small town milieu and the usual mix of quirky characters that we have often seen in movies set in Northern India. So you have two sets of joint families and most of their time seems to be divided between eating copious amounts of jalebi and kachoris and trying to find the required bride and bridegroom for their respective off-springs. While it may have been intended as a quirky comedy of a so called misfit couple, the tedious chain of events in the film makes it a tiresome watch after a point. And although it tried to be a social satire, many of the dialogues and scenarios are problematic.

Whatever decent ideas it has about marrying for the right reasons, chasing ambition on one’s own merit and the reality of parental exploitation are diluted when Motichoor Chaknachoor brushes off the rampant regressiveness engulfing Nawaz-Athiya’s unlikely, quaint chemistry.

Motichoor Chaknachoor could have been a blockbuster comedy. But alas, with its ambling laidback storytelling style, it falls short. This comic tale about a marriage of convenience gone wrong at best makes for a good home watch on an OTT platform or TV channel.
