But just when we expect the second half to deliver us such moments, especially with the promised return of Kathir (Dhanush, who plays this cold-blooded killer with relish), the film begins to lose intensity. From the world of Selvaraghavan, we find ourselves transported to generic psycho killer territory. And events unfold in a very convenient fashion, offering us hardly any surprise. Instead of the craziness of Aalavandhan and the chills of a horror film, we get something rather tame and tepid.

On the whole, Selvaraghavan delivers a fine thriller with Naane Varuvean which throws enough surprises in the first half but has a predictable second that lacks depth. However, the film is worth seeing for Dhanush’s performance and the way in which he carries the characters of the film until the end.

Naane Varuvean has a gripping first half with a superb interval block, but for most of the second half, a hype is created for the face-off between Kathir and Prabhu, but when the moment finally arrives near the climax, it is less intriguing. The last 20 minutes could have definitely been staged better, which also would have made the entire film better than what it is right now.

OThe first half of Naane Varuven has Selvaraghavan written all over it. We see his quirks and trademark elements that are nonchalant and impressive. But, when the big reveal happens in the second half of Naane Varuven, you can easily be disappointed. It’s as if the halves of the film were written by two different people. The latter half of the film treads a clichéd path and the climax is distastefully done.

Overall, Naane Varuven has its moments, and the exploration of Kathir’s character is intriguing As a whole, however, the film needed to be a tad bit more dynamic. Especially the way they arrive at a resolution to the central conflict is just laden with unnecessary weight.

Naane Varuvean is a clean and decent psychological thriller suitable for the family audience. The movie is a great comeback for Selvaraghavan to his core and the brothers’ duo created another remarkable film.
