Lokesh Kanagaraj’s story is very long-drawn and often convoluted and contrived. Lokesh Kanagaraj’s screenplay, with additional screenplay by Chandru Anbazhagan, is confusing — and that’s not just because of the excessive characters in the drama. The screenplay is so round-and-about that the drama often tests the viewers’ patience. Rajinikanth does well as Deva, but there’s nothing extraordinary about his acting. On the whole, Coolie The Powerhouse is an average fare and will not make a great mark at the Hindi box-office. Collections tomorrow will jump dramatically because of the Independence Day national holiday.

Technically, ‘Coolie’ is brilliant. Be it Girish Gangadharan’s cinematography or Anirudh Ravichander’s pulsating music, the technicians delivered on all fronts, including sound design, production design, and VFX.Director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s ‘Coolie’ is an underwhelming entertainer that suffers from overstuffed ideas. Rajinikanth’s screen presence and Anirudh Ravichander’s music save the film from drowning.

Aamir Khan makes his entry towards the end with a spirited cameo that does bring some genuine laughs, but the desired impact is not achieved. The only time Lokesh cuts to visuals from the much hyped flashback sequences from the film, and those two are the best two sequences in the movie. The desired viscerality comes through, and they do a good job de-aging Rajinikanth for that stretch. One could only wish that the rest of the film measured up to the thrills of those two sequences.

While the first half could have been tighter, the second half more than compensates, making Coolie a high-energy, nostalgic, and entertaining ride for fans. With high-octane action, charismatic star power, and well-placed surprises, Coolie is a perfect blend of mass appeal and crowd-pleasing entertainment. And now, to the million-dollar question — is it part of the LCU? Lokesh cleverly slips in the word “drug” in the film, leaving it to the fans to decide whether to see it as part of the larger universe or enjoy it as a standalone story.

Coolie plays out in a man’s world. The likes of Preethi, notwithstanding the amount of screen time she has, is only of secondary importance. So is everybody else in the film and that includes the writer-director himself. It is Rajinikanth the star and Deva the character who call the shots all the way through. Should anybody be complaining?

Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for his stylish and massy storytelling, once again delivered his signature entertainer with the combination of chartbuster tracks, high elevation BGM, raw action sequences and an ensemble cast oozing swag. While Coolie might not be his finest work like Vikram or Kaithi, it gives several moments to cheer for you on the big screen. On the whole, Coolie is a massy treat for Thalaivar fans, which epically celebrates 50 years of Rajinisim.

As much as the action and Rajinikanth’s swag dominate the film, what impresses is the screenplay and story. The plot twists are nothing short of impressive. Though a little predictable, the story flows in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The climax is packed not just with action, but the famous cameo appearance by Aamir Khan. The plot twists don’t end there. Wait till you watch the tail-end scene to be taken back in time. Overall, Lokesh Kanagaraj has managed to bring a banger to the theatres that need to be enjoyed on the big screen with a hall filled with Rajini fans.

Kanagaraj does badly by the female characters yet again, with Preethi constantly in danger of being raped and not too bright either. The attention is firmly on Rajinikanth, playing the same-old hero with flexible morals with unbridled enthusiasm. Shahir is the film’s scene-stealer, memorably capturing Dayal’s horridness and dancing skills.

Overall, Sun Pictures Coolie delivers big for action lovers and Rajini fans alike, with enough merit to keep audiences engaged while sprinkling in well-conceived mass moments for the ensemble cast. Coolie unapologetically delivers grit, gore, and star power.
