Hidden not so subtly in this jarringly colourful movie is a scathing critique of crony capitalism. It addresses a very serious issue in the way pharmaceutical companies collude to keep medicines beyond regular people, often marking up the cost of production for huge margins. But the actual argument against capitalism is this film itself. It shows us what loads of nothing but money can do to an art form like cinema. The Legend is nowhere close to being a real movie and it is, instead, a big, bloated ego trip that believes money is the same as creativity. It is also the most fun you’re likely to have this Aadi season.

With The Legend, JD-Jery borrow director Shankar’s playbook from his 2007-blockbuster Sivaji and give us a film based on the privileged-saviour-hero and five-songs-six-fights formula of the commercial cinema of that time – one had become dated even by the end of that decade. Seeing it play out on the big screen after 15 years only gives us a sense of ennui as every scenario they come up with feels dull, unimaginative and totally predictable.

The Rajinikanth template is a tried-and-tested one for any new actor trying to break into superstardom, and Saravanan is no different. The love for Rajinikanth is so much that the vital plot points, song sequences, and action set-pieces of The Legend are more like watching a watered-down version of the Superstar’s highlights reel. While the Sivaji hangover is most prevalent, we also get slight doses of Ejamaan and Muthu. But make no mistake, there is just one star in The Legend, and it is Saravanan. The Legend exists for the sole reason of Saravanan living his dream and being the star of a mass masala entertainer. He is a brilliant assembler and gets together the best possible team to make this dream into a reality.

Sadly, The Legend also fails to consistently be hilarious in its long 160-minute runtime. On top of it all, this is also a film that ridiculously uses Vivekh, even making one feel guilty for disliking the role of the late legendary actor.

Verdict: Over the top commercial masala that could have had better writing! The film will be your stress buster if you know what to expect, else might leave you stressed.
