P. Vinoth’s direction is fair. He has catered to the South audiences but the pan-India youth would not find the masala in the film to their liking. There are no songs in the Hindi version, and that’s a minus point. Ghibran’s background music is very nice. Nirav Shah and Ilya Boyko’s cinematography is fantastic. Action scenes have been wonderfully choreographed by Dilip Subbarayan and Sergey Golovkin, but the youngsters among the Hindi film-going audience will find the action and stunt scenes over-the-top. The flying motorbike scenes are not only too lengthy but are also, literally and figuratively, over-the-top as they are often so high in the air! K. Kathir’s art direction is of a good standard. Vijay Velukutty’s editing is loose. The film could’ve done with a far shorter length; it should’ve been of maybe at least 20-25 minutes’ lesser duration. Dubbing is good.

It’s a clash between stunts and sentiment in Valimai, a somewhat engaging but overlong action movie that hides its simplistic writing with elaborate action set-pieces. We keep getting a sense of Vinoth trying hard to strike a balance between making a gritty action movie and satisfying the demands of a star vehicle. Despite the scope for rooting the action scenes in emotion, the film is content with treating them as just standalone set-pieces. We see this approach clearly in the superficial manner in which the film deals with its secondary characters and their relationship with Arjun. This is why the film feels less impactful when we are not in the middle of of an action sequences.

Overall, Valimai is an action thriller that works well, sticking to the director’s strength in the first half. The weaknesses are exposed in the second half as there is nothing exciting plot-wise. If you love action movies, you can give Valimai a try for the first half. But, remember it’s a patience-testing watch due to the excruciatingly long length.

Overall, despite the 3 hour runtime, the film is highly engaging and entertaining. The film promised action, and it delivers the promise without any doubt. The last time fans had a glimpse of their favourite star was at least 900+ days back. And he’s back with a bang to turn the theatres into a ‘thiruvizha’.

Unfortunately, Valimai lacks logic at large levels and is this because of a fact that Valimai is more of a star vehicle film?. The writing of the villain character is templated and he seems to be a replica of many other stylish villains that Tamil cinema has seen in the past.

Quite an engaging first hour with a convincing setup and has a couple of unimaginably grand-scale intense chase sequences, also the story has enough potential to hit the right chord… Despite these factors, it doesn’t offer anything exceptional on the whole due to a lot of usual stuffing especially in the second half. With a crisper screen-writing and a gripping latter, this could have been something big.
