Vishal looks earnest throughout, even in the heavily Anjaan-inspired second half. Porus gets to the final villain by working his way up the pecking order of bad guys. You get scene after scene where he beats up a guy only for him to lead him to another guy and so on until he gets to Nedunchezhian himself. For his part, Nedunchezhian tries to proactively kill his men off before Porus gets to them. And because we already know Porus will eventually find Nedunchzhian and kill him, Veeramae Vaagai Soodum feels like a cat and mouse game after Thu. Pa. Saravanan has tied up both their tails together.

Saravanam utterly failed in presenting the movie on an entertaining note, despite his noble intentions in highlighting the problems of ordinary people. Instead of following the standard pattern approach, he should have concentrated on the presentation aspect, which would have yielded a little better result. Overall, A Regular Action Drama with Vishal’s Action is the saving grace

Veeramae Vaagai Soodum translates to ‘it is bravery that will wear the crown of victory’. The ‘king’ on the hunt for this crown is Porus (Vishal), named after an ancient king who is said to have stood up to Alexander’s might. If that inspires visions of a mighty hero striding across the screen and fighting an awe-inspiring battle, you should considerably lower your expectations. Thu Pa Saravanan’s film with Vishal in the lead is so full of cliches and convenient coincidences that I wondered if the title ‘Kaadhil Poo Soodavum’ (a difficult-to-translate Tamil phrase that implies gullibility) would have been more suitable since that’s what it demands from the audience.

Nevertheless, there is an effort to rationalise everything. I liked how the narrative tried to provide reason to the smaller moments and foreshadows it. But these do not plug in all the loopholes. The film wants to try something new but is not ready to let go of its dated cliches. Just like how it wants its hero to be a common man, but treats him like the garden variety cinema vigilante. The film argues that bravery is enough to win. But it is not enough to be bold; one also needs to be smart. Unfortunately, the film fails on that front.

Veeramae Vaagai Soodum is an underwhelming film, with regards to the writing and packaging. The story does not offer anything new or fresh, taking us through a path that we have already travelled. The predictability is one of the major concerns for this film. Right at the moment when we see Raveena’s character facing a problem from a rowdy, you start predicting the scenes and you are never tricked or taken by surprise until the very end. The screenplay fails to keep us hooked because of its uninspiring writing and artificial performances.
