The problem with I is that the story becomes predictable beyond a point. The villains are weak, the love portion in China extends more than what it should have and though songs are brilliant stand alone, they do have an impact on the pace of the narration. Ultimately, it’s an amalgamation of Masters at play which works to a larger extent because of their huge efforts. Verdict: Watch it for Vikram !

I is just more of the same – it’s the old vigilante scenario, except that the villains don’t represent a microcosm of society. This time, it’s purely personal. The evildoers in I mess up the hero’s life and he embarks on revenge.. There’s no urgency, no tension, not one surprising moment in the narrative — even the mastermind-villain’s identity is evident from the minute we set eyes on him.

Given the lavish budget, I is visually grandiose and that’s not a surprise. But the visuals don’t make up for the weak script. Even AR Rahman’s music doesn’t make much of a difference but for remaining mostly soothing and melodic. Returning after a gap of three years, Shankar should’ve gauged the pulse of the audiences who now prefer short stories over a three-hour film. All that’s big may not necessarily be great. Hope Shankar realises that much better films can be made on a smaller canvas and much lower budget.

‘I’ is definitely, a film that touches the pinnacle of technical extravaganza and special thanks to Weta Studios for an incredulous effort. But, a convincing screenplay and inclusion of newfangled rhetoric thinking could have kept it on pars with ‘Enthiran’. Verdict: It’s V(I)KRAM and only V(I)KRAM.

Of all the Shankar movies, I is the most predictable one; be it the plot or the next to come sequence. It’s surprising to see mediocre dubbing in a perfectionist’s movie, all the lip synch between the non-Tamil speakers look haywire. At a stretch of 189 minutes, the screenplay clearly tugs along giving out time for ample dull moments, could have been trimmed. An age old tested storyline heavily weighs on Vikram’s performance and makes the viewers constantly in search of thrills and perks. Ergo, I capitalizes too much on Vikram’s energetic performances yet crosses the boundary line in style.

I is an emotionally engaging, expertly directed, dazzlingly shot and technically staggering tale spearheaded by Vikram’s dumb-founding, superlative, career-best performance. I will be remembered as a film where ‪‎Vikram proved his mettle as a stupefying method actor on par with Kamal Haasan in Indian cinema. Toting up ‘I’, the visuals dazzle your eyes, Vikram’s sterling performance breaks your heart and shivers your soul.
