Pa. Ranjith’s second feature titled Madras, starring Karthi and Catherine, compensates for it by providing a rich, pulsating account of life in the slums. It marks a superb comeback for Karthi after a string of duds. Rarely does one gets to see a Tamil film that reflects the social reality so closely and sketching a detailed account of life that the middle and the upper middle class know little about. Full marks to Pa. Ranjith for that.

The film encompasses elements like politics, drama, friendship, romance, betrayal, revenge and pride, and is a gripping affair all the way, with just a few minor breathers in the second half when the fare becomes predictable. To sum up, Madras, though on the longer side and venturing into predictable territory beyond a point, stands out for the presentation, the characterizations, the performances and for the unflinching direction efforts of Ranjith. Verdict: Madras definitely deserves a trip to the theaters

The first half of Madras has some unique moments that deserved to be mentioned, which actually sum up the characters, like an overprotective mom who wants a fitting bride for her son and the rare but convincing friendship of Kaali and Anbu, a street loafer who roams around as Johnny! Not to single out the romance that blooms between Karthi and Catherine. The director sets the stage for a blood boiling revenge tale through the second half and springs in some surprises that only seems logical.

Pa. Ranjith deserves a lot of kudos for his maturity in story-telling and passion for diving deeper into a strata of a society from North Madras.  The movie has equal dosage of realism and commercialism blended well to give viewers a unique North Madras experience. The dialogues and dialects are quick and witty. Overall, The director shows a lot of promise and originality in his second movie. Madras successfully follows the path of realistic commercial genre in Tamil cinema. Madras strongly showcases the calibre of director Pa.Ranjith and for his entire team. So, if you are the kind that likes making styles in movies such a Polladhavan and Aadukalam, Madras may be the right one for you.
