EVR lacks the punch of #EkVillain… Has some interesting twists, that’s it… The villain here is the [lacklustre] script… A golden opportunity lost!

On the whole, Ek Villain Returns is a very ordinary fare and not at all a worthy successor to Ek Villain. Its music (‘Teri galiyaan’ and ‘Dil’ songs) is its biggest plus point. The youth may like the film for its edginess and music but that will not be enough for it to emerge victorious at the box-office.

Eight years ago, director Mohit Suri, seemingly inspired by the Korean film I Saw the Devil (2010), created a deeply misogynistic but genuinely creepy tale about a serial killer. Rakesh Mahadkar, a seemingly meek and ineffectual man, dealt with his frustration and anxieties by killing women. The final frontier of foolishness is breached in the climax – I won’t spoil it for you, but it pushes the film firmly into the so-bad-that-it’s-good territory. So once again, I must go back to American film critic Gene Siskel’s immortal line — “Is this film more interesting than a documentary of the same actors having lunch?” The answer is a resounding no.

The performances in the film don’t really stand-out, and most of the actors in their parts feel limited. If their characters had been better fleshed out, it could have probably given them more scope to rise in their individual performances. Ek Villain Returns dishes out plenty of twists and turns but doesn’t make you emotionally cheer for any of the characters or the story, though you wish the situation was different.

But a disjointed plot and pedestrian performances do not an effective film make: in comparison, the less than middling ‘Ek Villain’, starring Siddharth Malhotra-Riteish Deshmukh-Shraddha Kapoor, feels like a better film.Mohit Suri’s editions of his dark, pulpy universe, buoyed by Sufi ditties, used to be able to keep us with them, but even by the law of diminishing returns, ‘Ek Villain Returns’ has sunk to a low low.

The gripping plot of Ek Villain Returns is the winner with an engaging storyline. Mohit Suri, who did a good job with the first film of the Ek Villain franchise, brings a masala entertainer with massy dialogues, thrilling moments and good performances in the sequel. While there are some impressive stunts in the films, there are a few bad VFXs as well.

‘Ek Villain 2’ also has action sequences suitable to the genre. However, the last faceoff between good-evil i.e. Arjun-John is really bad. In the end, good triumphs over evil as evil sits in a mental asylum alive and now under the ‘panah’ of Riteish Deshmukh’s character who is alive giving an excuse for another installment of ‘Ek Villain’ to follow. In all, ‘Ek Villain 2’ is a thriller-erotica done right with the help of everything else but its actors.

Mohit Suri and Aseem Arora’s story is intriguing and like the first time, promises a healthy dose of romance, heartbreak and violence. On the whole, EK VILLAIN RETURNS is a perfect amalgamation of supreme music, amazing visuals, thrilling moments, and strong franchise value. At the box office, it can surprise, especially in the mass centres and emerge as a huge success.

Ek Villain has everything that one commercial movie can expect – massy dialogues, action, cliche lines, terrific songs and loaded romance. The Ek Villain Returns platter is full of commercial value.Overall, Ek Villain Returns shows a constant fight between good and bad, hero and villain; however, it is Arjun Kapoor that takes away all the attention from others.

All in all, Ek Villain Returns could work well amongst the younger generation with four stars in a whodunit romantic murder mystery. P.s.: Don’t miss the last shot, which might give you a hint, what next!!
