Ab Tak Chappan 2 Hindi Movie Review

Ratings:1.5/5 Review By:  Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

Ab Tak Chhappan 2 has neither the benefit of Shimit Amin’s crisp direction nor a script as wholesome and probing as the first one. Even Ramgopal Varma, who produced the earlier film, isn’t involved with this one. What it does have, unfortunately, is the same dizzying camerawork of many of Varma’s recent films. I came out with my head spinning. I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for Ab Tak Chhappan 2. Everything about it feels rehashed and redundant.

The film struggles to hold your attention. Also, cops, politicians, journalists, basically everyone involved in the film keep spouting the same lines, giving us a demo on how the words (system, force and mission) can be used in multiple ways… ‘System ko badalna hoga, system yeh kehti hai, system yeh, system woh…’ the obsession doesn’t end.Despite its flaws, ATC2 can be watched, if you are a diehard Nana Patekar fan. On second thoughts, watching the original again would be a smarter move.

You know where this is going already, don’t you? Sadly, Ab Tak Chhappan 2 is so terribly obvious in its deviousness, there’s not even a smidgen of surprise to expect. Nana Patekar tries to hold it all together with an alacrity and prudence that deserves a Denzel Washington framework. Keeping his head high is the best he can do in the face of predictable easy targets and turncoats. It’s time to stop keeping score.

The sad part is that, while Shimit delivered a substantial AB TAK CHHAPPAN, Aejaz falters very badly with AB TAK CHHAPPAN 2, right from the word go. He fails miserably to keep the audiences engaged in the film’s plot, courtesy, the directionless storyline, hopelessly and unbelievably poor camera work and very average performances by everyone. On the whole, AB TAK CHHAPPAN 2 is a poorly made sequel and can be skipped.

This kind of film can work if it has a new spin on an old story. But the cop who gets busy notching up kills, without making us wonder about the morality of someone taking it upon themselves to exterminate humans, is a cipher. So is the film. And the worst part? It’s full of blips, everyone’s lips going silent, as soon as, presumably, a cussword comes along. Oh our delicate ears.

Nana Patekar is good but was better in the first part. Gul Panag plays a crime reporter but the poor writing makes her character a complete misfit.Ab Tak Chappan 2 is a pointless film. It’s a film that shouldn’t have been made in the first place. It misfires!

This well-crafted and much appreciated film sided with the cop’s debatable point of view. But then that was a decade ago, when the underworld was a looming threat and the encounter technique hadn’t come under the scanner. Avoid. If feeling nostalgic, watch the original again.

There is nothing appealing in this sequel. Shimit Amin could have given some tips to Gulab before creating this camera disaster. If you are a die-hard Nana Patekar fan, still you won’t enjoy it so to avoid tampering his image don’t watch it.

It’s a familiar story, but what makes it engaging is the no-frills approach to how the events unfurl. There are no songs or unnecessary dialogues to put the brakes on the story, but there are no riveting twists either to make it entertaining from start to finish. The twists are far too predictable and lame. Watch this if you are a fan of Patekar and have an appetite for gory gangster-cop films.

Ashutosh Rana enters as his insecure subordinate, and distracts him immensely with his need to steal the spotlight. It’s unfortunate that he’s left to indulge in fun banter, but never allowed to flex his acting chops. . Eleven years after director Shimit Amin created the magnanimous encounter specialist Sadhu, Gulab crushes him with an unfitting comeback.
