It is so important for every series to have a good climax because it is what stays with you and eventually decides the fate of the movie or series in your mind. If you shut your laptop with a smile on your face, you know you will have more good things to say about it that bad. And for me, the climax was one that maybe a little stereotypical, but it wasn’t one that fails to make a mark. In parts, there were elements that were a surprise, and that’s just about enough.

The deft mix of tragedy and dark humour that marked the original is reduced to sensationalism and depravity. No matter how much one is opposed to censorship, in principle, the exploitative way in which the women are treated is discomfiting. It’s all very well to pick foreign content to remake but one wonders what is the target audience for Rana Naidu. In spite of a selection of fine actors doing their best, and an eye-catching visual quality, the series is more disturbing than entertaining.

As the series waddles along, we are fed with a variety of incidents in which Rana tops. He has to, after all, he is the hero and Anshuman’s work has all the look and feel of a Telugu drama. It is loud and garishly colourful. Some of the colours hit my eye, and I found there was very little aestheticism. The story in 10 episodes could have been easily condensed into five; this way, Rana Naidu may have held a semblance of interest.

An intriguing watch, Rana Naidu is a sordid tale in 10 chapters that will leave you conflicted, unsatisfied, and yet oddly craving for more. A pure dramatic entertainer that helps Rana Daggubati and Venkatesh Daggubati shine like never before, Rana Naidu is a resplendent look at the underbelly of Mumbai, but above all is a love story in acting – courtesy Rana Daggubati and Venkatesh Daggubati.

Rana Naidu, the Indian adaptation of Ray Donovan, may come across like a crime caper, but what it is actually at the heart is a family drama. It’s definitely not your quintessential family drama, but one where every member of the brood is fighting their own demons, while dealing with years of lies and tension. This portrayal of a dysfunctional family with a blend of crime, celebrity scandal cover-ups and politics makes the show quite riveting. This also allows it to work on its own without the need to be compared with the original.
