With this Santhosh Subramaniam-meets-Nanban set-up, debutant director Cibi Chakaravarthi makes it possible for him to play to both the younger and older crowd. He smartly divides the film into two halves – the first-half for the youth, the second-half for the family audience. Yes, we see how calculated this approach is, which makes Don less of a coming-of-age story and more of a commercial entertainer, but the director manages to succeed.

Overall, Don entertains and engages you with the humour running high in a lot of scenes. The performances do justice to Cibi Chakravarthi’s writing with Sivakarthikeyan leading from the front. The film is family friendly and the message that the film holds is conveyed in a non preachy way. Don will be definitely an engaging watch.

. It’s a good way to describe Don. The film’s strength lies in its emotional core, which sadly still holds a lot of relevance in the Indian context. The performances largely bring this inherent ‘truth’ to the front. Sivakarthikeyan, Samuthirakani, and SJ Suryah give compelling performances that almost make us forgive the contrivances and exaggerations in treatment. Well, almost.

In ‘Spider-Man No Way Home’, Zendaya would be saying, “Expect Disappointment, and you will never be disappointed” and that is what I was thinking from Siva Karthikeyan’s Don before entering the theater. I was absolutely expecting some cringeworthy stuff and unexpectedly I got a delightful treat from Siva Karthikeyan. Chakravarthi is a last bench student and he does all notorious things and becomes ‘Don’ in the college.
