: Gentle, simple, heartwarming love stories are always welcome, especially in this climate where one can’t ignore Hindi cinema’s obsessive affinity towards aggressive, gory, testosterone-pumped actioners. But simplicity shouldn’t be mistaken for shallowness or a lack of substance.The makers are so intent on keeping things breezy and neat that they never quite engage with the emotional mess of the characters.

Ek Din’ is a film that had the chance to go much deeper and truly move the audience, but the screenplay holds it back. First-time director Sunil Pandey shows sincerity, but his lack of experience is visible. The film leans on familiar ideas and never fully explores its emotional strength. It is unclear whether it wants to remain light or deliver a strong emotional impact.

Ek Din isn’t actively terrible. It tries to bring back clean youthful romance back to Bollywood, currently trapped between excessively violent and misogynist planks. It’s even got a forgettable Arijit song. But, just like its leads, it has no zing.

An official adaptation of the 2016 Thai romance One Day, Sai Pallavi and Junaid Khan’s Ek Din fails to create the magic the Chantavit Dhanasevi, Nittha Jirayungyurn-starrer did a decade ago. While the music is great and touches the audiences’ souls, the creepiness of Junaid’s character is a big turn off. Watch it in theatres only if you are a huge Sai fan, else wait till it releases on OTT.

‘Ek Din’ is like an elegantly arranged symphony whose notes are not particularly profound. But they suggest an enduring harmony between the location and the heart. You can’t miss the sound of the breaking heart, not when Ram Sampath’s background score manifests a measured emotional undercurrent while the lead actors take centre stage.And if all fails — and that’s not the case here — there is always Sai Pallavi, an actress so far ahead of the competition she makes the rest look like cheerleaders.
