On the whole, Thalapathy Is The G.O.A.T. is a box-office winner. It will click with the public because it has tremendous entertainment value. The original (Tamil) version will prove to be a super-hit. Released on 5-9-’24 at Maratha Mandir (daily 2 shows) and other cinemas of Bombay thru Zee Studios. Publicity: so-so. Opening: fair. …….Also released all over. Opening was not bad (considering that it is a dubbed film and has opened on an odd day).

That is the sort of rescue act that he has pulled off so often this millennium that it has stopped surprising his critics. His fans, of course, will find no reason to feel shortchanged with what The Greatest of All Time in generous proportions.

On the whole, The Greatest of All Time (The GOAT) is a standard revenge action drama that leans heavily on Vijay’s performance. His portrayal of the villainous Jeevan and the face-off scenes are the film’s highlights, but beyond that, it offers little in terms of novelty or excitement. The slow pacing, long runtime, score, and numerous plot holes make it a challenging watch for all but die-hard Vijay fans.

The star vehicles have evolved to become a string of ‘mass’ Instagram reels, connected by a semblance of a story. Rajinikanth’s Jailer was a good example of it, where all the theatre moments worked because there was some deliberation with each such scene. There were those surprise sniper kills, a ruse to fool the villain, a trick to topple the van… and then comes the Superstar in slow motion to drop the crescendo. Here, we just keep getting the crescendo without the gradual foreplay. Superstar films in India suffer from the same problem as Hollywood’s superhero films. It has come down to getting the dopamine hit seeing the cameos, the easter eggs, the bigger universe, and the post-credit scene. It leaves one wondering how these hollow fan services will age making up to titles like The Greatest of All Time.

A screenplay based action flick, some bumps in the second half. Yet an engaging watch filled with many commercially charged theatre moments

Endless fan moments, all mass and no solid substance makes GOAT an average watch for the film lovers, and a celebrated watch for his hard-core fans. In his 32-year-odd career and 68 films, GOAT is good, but definitely not Greatest Of All Times!

There is no doubt that GOAT is indeed a celebration of all things Vijay. His dancing, action sequences, comic timing, vulnerability, romantic charm, and effortless superstardom are all stuff of dreams. A dream that is slowly moving away from the audience. Probably why Venkat Prabhu does things that he might not have done if the film wasn’t weighed down by this added burden. We know we are in for the last phase of this journey with one of our greatest superstars, and even if the film falls quite a bit away from the target of being the greatest of all time, it’s okay, because now we are down to just one more.

The GOAT is not a perfect film but VP has ensured that he has packaged enough and more in it to keep us engaged and thrilled throughout the runtime. The film has its flaws thanks to a few dull moments in the second half, but apart from that, it is a free flowing entertainer and that is a great result for the fans, just what the doctor ordered!
