All said and done, A good period film has always comprised of two good parts – the first one, of course, being the mob-swarming wars & second are the sequences that led the rulers to the battlefield. Akshay Kumar’s Samrat Prithviraj fails in having the second part in its place which leaves quite a few things half-baked.

When ads of a film proclaim that it is about the last Hindu emperor, and its hero states that very little is known about Prithviraj Chauhan, as if the film were meant to right that historical injustice, it is impossible to watch it without being aware of the subtext. More so, considering the times we are living in.However, like the listeners of the balladeers of yore, watch it as entertainment or a heavily fictionalised version of history.

A movie that makes no bones about its purpose, Samrat Prithviraj is exactly what you expect it to be: a purveyor of fanciful history draped in the glossiest of Bollywood finery. But for all its desperate distortions, the film would have been deemed a passable vehicle of mass entertainment had it not been so utterly insipid. It is colourful, action-packed and laced with music, but it is spectacularly soulless.

If you aren’t put to sleep by the dialogue-baazi and manage to stay awake for the scanty fight scenes to appear, you will be put off by the terrible CGI waiting to greet you there. To think that this is a YRF production! If Bollywood’s fate rests on Samrat Prithviraj, the future is blank. Where’s our blindfold?

The shadow of Sanjay Leela Bhansali hangs over the scenes in which the key actors and extras stand in perfect formation or at exact angles to one another. But lacking Bhansali’s felicity with spectacle and movement and unable to add anything new or interesting to what is already broadly know about Prithviraj Chauhan, the film tries its best to be stately and impressive, just like its miscast hero.
