Raw. Brutal. Intense… A gangster drama that works for the most part, despite shortcomings… #RajkummarRao is outstanding in a savage avatar… A stretched second half acts as a deterrent. Final word? #Maalik is desi at heart – aimed at the mass circuits and for those who relish gritty, rustic gangster dramas.

On the whole, Maalik is a very ordinary fare with some chances in pockets of circuits like U.P., Bihar and Rajasthan only. For the rest, it will not be able to sustain at the turnstiles.

Rao’s thing with the effective Manushi Chillar, who plays Maalik’s-wife-as-moral-compass, is watchable, because despite everything, Rao stays watchable. But the film is predictable to a fault– you see a car with a woman who has just bid a tender farewell to her beloved, and you know what’s going to happen next; you see an askance look between master and loyal servant, and you know that betrayal is up next. A new gangster drama with old beats is not the break-out that Rao must have been hoping for

He does not play Maalik like a nice guy, without the physique or mindset to be bad, forced by circumstances to become a killer. There is no complexity to his badness, so to project the vile in him, he needs props like a cigarette and a gun.Actors would walk on coals to do the kind of roles Rao has done in the past, and he wants to be run of the mill!

If you are a gangster drama-villain as hero-violence freak, you will find nothing here that was not there in the zillion such underworld-meets-politics movies that everyone from Ram Gopal Varma and Mahesh Manjrekar to Anurag Kashyap and the South filmmakers have been peddling for more than two decades now.

Maalik’s powerful lead performance, realistic storyline, and evocative world-building make it stand out even though it isn’t a groundbreaking movie in the gangster genre. Fans of gritty criminal dramas will find this well-made, emotionally impactful movie to be worth seeing. A strong mobster story that is propelled by a strong performance will make you ignore the shortcomings. Rajkummar Rao and Pulkit’s Maalik rightly deserves 3 out of 5 stars.

In conclusion, Maalik is not just a tale of guns and power, it’s a deeply human story of survival, ambition, and the price one pays for becoming a legend. Backed by Tips Films and Northern Lights Films, Maalik is a gritty, emotional ride that’s both entertaining and thought-provoking. With powerful performances, fiery dialogues, and striking visuals, it’s a must-watch for lovers of gritty Indian cinema.

Set in the backdrop of Prayagraj (then Allahabad) in 1988, ‘Maalik’ is the extraordinary journey of a common man who is forced by circumstances to enter the world of crime. The film is not just about guns and bloodshed, but is a deeply human tale woven with emotions, moral conflicts and difficult decisions.

Maalik may not break new ground in the gangster genre, but it stands tall thanks to its strong lead performance, grounded storytelling, and atmospheric world-building. It’s a well-crafted, emotionally resonant film that’s worth a watch-especially for fans of gritty crime dramas.

Also, the mood of the storytelling is savage. It may strike some sections of the audience as excessively violent. But there is no denying the fact that Pulkit has constructed a spellbinding spiral of hurts and wounds that tell a story of an exploitative caste-based social order which favours the empowered.Pulkit doesn’t put too much stress on the theme of social inequality. He just wants to tell a punitive story that keeps us on the edge of the seat. In that, Maalik scores brainy and brawny points.
