Too much of Class of 83 feels like a retread. The faces are new but the portrayal of the system, corruption, the utter lawlessness of both cops and criminals, is familiar. The film doesn’t offer new insight or characters compelling enough to make the material feel fresh. Which is why, despite the talent on display, it doesn’t soar. You can watch Class of 83 on Netflix.

Still, Class of ‘83 works both as a well-realised if a trifle sketchy hark-back at an interesting epoch, as well as an entertainer. Though we’ve seen so many iterations of the gangsters vs honest law enforcers in the movies, there’s always room for another. Especially because we need stories of cops who believe in their motto of ‘protect the good and destroy the evil’, today more than ever.

Bobby Deol and the technicians stays focused on the job but Class of ’83 lets its attention wander. It never fully hits its stride as a result.

With dimly-lit streets and ambassador cars, the look of the film reminds of Bombay without its super-crowded streets and ominous dockyards, but Class of ’83 doesn’t rise above this. The excitement of an underworld versus police story is not there.

As a producer for Netflix Original, Shah Rukh Khan didn’t seem to have a great run with Bard of the Blood and Betaal (both shows). This is his first movie outing as the producer for the streaming platform which is on its way to the add-on factor.Overall, if you can invest one hour 38 minutes it might look prolonged and dud too. Time-saving runtime sadly couldn’t save this Class of ’83.

Have you ever felt EVERY second of every minute moving right through your bored soul? There are around 5 lac of such seconds in this with most of having Bobby Deol in them. All said and done, Class Of 83 in the hands of artists who know this world better would’ve been a far superior product. Nothing works for the film in its current version and it’s a shame because yet another good story wasted.

CLASS OF ’83 is based on the novel ‘The Class Of 83: The Punishers Of Mumbai Police’ by S Hussain Zaidi. The story has immense potential and could have made for a great commercial fare. But Abhijeet Deshpande’s screenplay is very weak and dry. On the whole, CLASS OF ’83 is a poor show because of the hurried narrative and lacklustre script and direction.

Class of ’83 is not to be watched lightly. Especially in the latter half when youthful banter is dispensed with and harsh realities take over, it demands close attention. As it happens, that attention is not hard to give because Sabharwal and editor Manas Mittal keep the proceedings rivetting at all times. Class of ’83 is a masterclass in entertaining minimalism.
