Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a strong step forward. Marvel fans looking for easter eggs won’t be disappointed – a few beloved MCU characters make an appearance and there are hints of what will come. I’m most excited at the possibility that somewhere down the line, in Phase 4 of the MCU, Katy and Dr. Strange might join hands. That would be something.You can watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at a theater near you. Please don’t forget to wear a mask.

Shang-chi has a certain spiritual calmness to it amidst the gorgeously choreographed action sequences. Never has a Marvel movie felt this unique in its execution and treatment. If you are looking for a film to end your big screen abstinence, this is the one.

One hopes, though, that Shang-Chi’s sequels will branch out into more original territory in terms of moral dilemmas. They have a winner on their hands with Liu, but he needs to be given the same narrative leeway that Marvel has given characters like Thor or Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. If that happens, Shang-Chi could well become one of the fan favourites for Phase Four.

In a nutshell, Shang Chi is without a doubt a wholesome entertainer. It can impress most. It’s a family drama, a revenge tale and of course a visually appealing action entertainer for superhero fans. You know how the story will unfold, you have seen such films and if you’ve read comics, you definitely know the story but how it pans out is effective. It is a definite watch in the theatres.
BTW, if you were hooked to ‘Come and get your love’ after watching Guardians of the Galaxy, Hotel California will be next on your playlist after watching Shang Chi.

Minor quibbles aside — Awkwafina’s character has no reason to be involved in the plot for as long as she is, and some of the CGI can feel a little gooey — Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is exactly the sort of refined entertainment that you’d expect from a Hollywood film of this scale.

Simu Liu makes for a charismatic action hero, the star attraction, Tony Leung, brings dignity, malice and a touch of sadness to his portrayal of Wenwu. Yet, even the master of understatement and subtlety cannot crack the mystery behind Wenwu’s often confusing behavioural shifts.
The martial arts displays are impressive, but some of the visual effects are murky, especially in the climactic battle. The most effective action set-piece is the one in San Francisco on a bus, in which Shang-Chi drops his mask and proves himself to be his father’s son.
