Santosh Singh’s direction is average. While he knows the craft of film direction, he should bear in mind that brevity is the soul of not just wit but also a box-office hit. He takes too long to come to the point.On the whole, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan does not have the soul which a love story of this kind should’ve had. As such, it will go largely unnoticed.

Strangers meeting on a train and falling in love has led to epic romances from Pakeezah to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Never though the experience has felt as bogus and bizarre as Saba and Jahaan’s blind encounter in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan.

This interesting premise sets the stage for what could have been a nuanced, layered love story. Instead, what unfolds is a more formulaic Bollywood narrative- boy meets girl, they fall in love, circumstances tear them apart, they reunite years later, and the story ends with the promise of forever.

On the downside, the film feels slightly stretched in the second half, and certain plot points become predictable. The love triangle could have been explored with more depth and intensity. Vikrant Massey looks haggard in some scenes, as though unable to shoulder the burden of Jahaan’s misery. Shanaya Kapoor makes a passable acting debut, but Saba’s lack of will or basic intelligence is jarring.

It could’ve been at least a great musical like Aashiqui. But from the credit titles that have lyrics about a ‘safar’ to annoying BG (like grating sounds while the general factotum speaks), Vishal Mishra’s album is not captivating. Vikrant Massey is unable to shoulder the film like a hero. Shanaya Kapoor has a glowing skin and makes a confident debut.
