Though emotionally satiating, one expects Kapil’s stand-up special to be funny and this does not live up to its name. Kapil, who thrives on interactive spontaneous humour, seems constricted with the change of setting. You feel like you have gate-crashed a family get-together instead of being an audience to a celebrated comic. Kapil is Not Done Yet for sure because he can do better than this.

A comedy routine that attempts a blurring of the line between friendly broadsides and personal confessions, Kapil Sharma: I’m Not Done Yet, is a largely pallid, hit-and-miss act that would have amounted to zilch had the popular television personality not held forth on his brushes with alcoholism, depression and troll armies (not in order of severity). Kapil Sharma: I’m Not Done Yet is sanitized, tread-with-care fare: funny in parts but never piercing enough to make a deep, lasting dent on cultivated pretences.

You don’t get bored even for a minute, as Kapil keeps you captivated and brings smiles to your face. He ends up the show with a tribute to his father who passed away before his son became a star, bringing tears to your eyes. This show is truly outstanding!

Can someone please tell Kapil this now? For almost the entire duration of his 55-minute set—an unstructured, unfunny performance that begins with a gross Covid-19 joke and ends with one of the most cringe-inducing songs ever streamed—Kapil, the most successful comedian in the country, positions himself as the underdog. He’s about as much of an underdog now as he was back in 2016, when, by his own admission, he drunkenly tweeted that he pays an annual income tax of Rs 15 crore.

Parting thought? If it wasn’t for Kapil’s tweet to PM Narendra Modi and then his ability to joke about it, this special would have nothing special about it. Kapil Sharma: I’m Not Done Yet is a seesaw that worked in parts, and will only appeal to his fanbase, which is huge, so there’s nothing to worry about, Netflix.

As far as comedy goes, Sharma has probably always been the funniest man in India. His peerless success, in the pre-influencer age mind you, is evidence of just how radical his participation has been in creating a scene where nothing existed. As for criticism against his brand of comedy which often pushes the limits of conduct and etiquette, the comedian is obviously smart enough to predict the offence. It is then I believe a matter of choice guided by demand rather than some notion to mend or alter it. It sounds cynical, obviously, but in an age where no joke can be made without the eventuality of cultural autopsies perhaps it makes sense to make hay while offence chimes.
