Mardaani 3 is definitely a must-watch. While the film stumbles, Rani strongly holds a simple script on her shoulders. Though there was scope to sharpen the script, a film with purpose deserves attention, and in Mardaani 3, Rani does manage to speak for those whose voices are often left unheard.

Mardaani 3 suffers from familiar Bollywood cop-film conventions where the protagonist is conveniently one step ahead until the narrative demands she be overpowered.The shadow of Delhi Crime 3 also looms large. In her righteous anger, Shivani recalls Vartika Chaturvedi, but Mardaani 3 is firmly rooted in the grammar of a Bollywood masala film. While the film is undeniably derivative, it remains stylish and well-constructed, elevated significantly by Rani Mukerji’s fierce screen presence.

Shivani Shivaji Roy has been appointed by the NIA to rescue the daughter of Ambassador Sahu, Ruhani. While playing hide and seek with caretaker’s daughter, Jhimli, Amma’s men kidnap them. Ruhani has been tested ‘positive’ and Jhimli is ‘negative’. The first half ends with many questions unanswered.The first half of Mardaani 3 is tight, crisp and pacy. The post-interval is make or break.

‘Mardaani 3’ does stumble at times, especially in the latter half when it deals with sensitive themes in a less nuanced way. The climax is average at beat. Even so, it remains a fairly engaging watch. The film rests firmly on Rani Mukerji’s shoulders, and she delivers yet again. One only wishes the second half matched the sharpness and intensity of the first.
