Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri’s direction is good as far as technique is concerned, but he has not been able to engage the audience’s attention consistently because the subject is scattered between two time periods — pre-independence years of 1946 and 1947, and decades later. The research is excellent but the horrifying scenes of the genocide repulse the audience (as they must) more than emotionally moving them (as they also should have). On the whole, The Bengal Files is a well-researched film but its box-office potential seems to be bleak.

Partition stories have often centered on the north-western frontier—Punjab, Sindh, and the horrors of displacement there. The east, and particularly Bengal’s trauma, has seldom received equal attention. Agnihotri taps into this untold narrative, making the audience confront those stories, however uncomfortable it makes them. The film has all the ingredients to spark heated debates: its historical perspective, its blame on certain leaders, and its insistence on dwelling on violence. Yet, amid the excesses, it also manages to connect at an emotional level, offering glimpses into suffering that transcend politics.

‘The Bengal Files’ may have differences of opinion in terms of factual accuracy and authenticity, yet it is a must-watch for those interested in understanding an alternate narrative. It is definitely not meant for the faint-hearted due to the depiction of violence against women and other innocent civilians. Whether you agree or disagree with Agnihotri, his world view has always been open to debates, discussions and opinions. But the film’s attempt at telling an emotionally haunting political story is commendable for its unconventional storytelling.

The Bengal elections are around the corner; and so are, according to this film, ‘vote-banks’ and ‘changed demographics’ which short-hands to ‘ghuspaithiyas’, a phrase much in currency these days.‘Why are we still doing Hindu-Muslim’, characters in the film are made to ask at several points. Well, there’s your answer.

The Bengal Files is indeed a gripping story, but the execution could have been better and I wish the film was stitched better and edited properly so that we didn’t have to sit through three and half hours and come out with a heavy heart. In brief the film could have been crisp and the message could have been easily delivered in not more than just two hours or even less.

That said, the film has its heart exactly where the makers intended it to be. Despite uneven storytelling, its underlying message comes through loud and clear.
Watch this if you’re a fan of Vivek Agnihotri’s cinema, but go in with a bucketful of patience and no expectations.

The Bengal Files is definitely loaded with agony and cataclysmic events. It strains for impact but the absence of sharpness and urgency leads it to remain a curiously flat film. It’s also baffling how a story that tells the history of Bengal was earlier titled The Delhi Files.

Ratings:4/5  Review By: Rajiv Site: Koimoi

If I have not rated the film higher, it is only because of its inordinate runtime and the unbridled gore, despite the fact that the real violence must have been much more barbaric. It has been suggested that children today should watch this film to be exposed to true history rather than the manipulated versions that have been revealed to us so far, but kids surely don’t need such a bloodied watch!
