The Archies presents a Zoya Akhtar-lite experience, offering a less rich and satisfying rendition of the themes that Zoya and her creative partner, Reema Kagti, have woven into their impressive careers. These themes include coming-of-age, class and cultural conflicts, the significance of inclusion and ambition, the power of storytelling, the transformative nature of art, and, consistently, the splendor of rebellion.

But what isnt, is the film itself. Only a couple of songs stand out: the opening one has real lilt. The plot does give us a sense of the world at the time €” a sit-in at the beloved Green Park which the townspeople are trying to save from greedy capitalists foreshadows the Woodstock protest, the local newspaper stands up for the right of free expression, same-sex love is hinted at, and a song goes Everything Is Political €” but overall, the writing isnt perky enough. The kids, though, are all right.

A vibrant colour palette, an array of wonderful musical tracks, the infectious verve of young actors, and a period story imbued with concerns of contemporary relevance propel The Archies into a zone where even the palpably facile is a whole lot of fun and marked by stylistic flair.

The Archies is a paean to simpler, softer times. Zoya never loses sight of that. When it’s time to stir people out of their apathy, it’s not an adrenalin-pumping rock and roll anthem but a serene ballad of hope dipped in her poet dad Javed Akhtar’s optimism — Yeh Saari Awaazein Kirney Ban Jayengi. Kirnein Jo Duniya Mein Nayi Roshni Layengi that draws people to do the right thing. It’s an evergreen thought passed on from generation to generation. And so are The Archies. Only wish it had some of the comic’s tee-hee humour and hyuk hyuk too.

The movie loses steam in the second half and could have been more engaging as the conflict escalates. Solutions are convenient, and the resolution is trifling. Overall, while the era, the look and feel have been created well, the movie ends up a tad underwhelming. What is delightful is watching a bunch of fresh new faces put their best food forward – whether for emoting on screen or doing some rock n roll the 60s tunes.

Adapting a story is a daunting task, and while we commend Zoya and Reema for their effort, will ‘The Archies’ reach the global acclaim achieved by ‘Squid Game’ for South Korea? Only time will tell! Catch ‘The Archies’ on Netflix

The film could have also been a tad bit shorter. Some scenes like Betty finding out about Veronica and Archie could have been written tighter. By the time the film reaches the climax, you are already zoning out of it. The climax is also done in a bit of a hurry and is predictable. With The Archies, it is evident that Zoya had a lot in store for the young generation and wanted to balance out every character but the task of it took a toll on the overall story.Should you watch The Archies? Give it a shot for the cast, look, and feel of the movie.

There is something intoxicatingly romantic about Zoya Akhter and Reema Kagtis The Archies. The concept is simple, but there are a lot of things that you will be able to relate to like the magic of picnics in the parks, going to book shops and attending the reading sessions. Memories galore, The Archies is all about nostalgia of the simple days of childhood. I guess those who have been in their teens in the sixties can relate to it all the more. No mobile phones, no video games, only simple unstructured outdoor activities, family gigs and the fun of community living.
