On the whole, Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny is a fair entertainer but its chances in India seem bleak because of its length and the climax which deals with the issue of the difficult-to-understand time travel. It will score better in English (also released simultaneously) than in Hindi.

The fifth instalment, however, does bring a sense of nostalgia for those who have watched all four or even one or two films in the franchise. It has been a long wait, over a decade now, and perhaps this is what will probably bring fans to experience the new adventure Indy will be on this time along. If you want to watch it for the pure nostalgia of it then this won’t be a disappointment.

The year is 1944 and the backdrop is World War II. We have the Nazis and NASA, and also brushes of nostalgia. Only hardcore fans will sense what it feels like to see a character you’ve grown up watching in his swan song, at least in a franchise. The trailer of the film says a legend will face its destiny. It holds true both for Jones and Ford, maybe he was destined to hang his boots with Dial of the Destiny. What would the franchise look like without his presence? Only destiny will tell, no puns here.

Harrison Ford is a Hollywood star in the old mould and his charisma is still strong enough to propel a film. His fans will have nothing to complain about but those looking for more than just sensory and visceral delights will find Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny disappointingly wanting.  So, Indy’s swan song lacks the power that would have made this film a befitting send-off to a loved fictional figure. To sum up, back to something that Indiana Jones says in the film. Early on, he asks Helena Shaw: “Why are a chasing a thing that drove your father crazy?” Exactly our question. Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny is a wild goose chase that goes nowhere. It isn’t all doom and disaster but it is dispiritingly dull.

Earnest final efforts from Harrison Ford and John Williams couldn’t rescue a movie so directionless and haphazard, or action that fails to recapture the swashbuckling joys of the originals. By asking why Indy is on this adventure in the first place, and what the character gains on the other side of it, Dial of Destiny concocts paradoxical answers that fail to meet in the middle. It’s a film about letting go of the past and moving forward, but one that refuses to do the same.
