The first half of the film is simply hilarious. Mostly every scene in the first will make you laugh. The dialogues in the film are just damn good, and they are perfectly used in the situations. Janhit Mein Jaari is filled with a lot of hilarious moments and gives an important message. Nushrratt carries the film wonderfully on her shoulders and proves that ‘sab pe ek womaniya bhari hai’.

The second half gets too preachy. While one would expect a balance of humour and message in the film, it is one of the points that is missing. Overall, the film makes for a decent, entertaining watch, and it is an important message that is being put across. Watch the film for the spot-on depiction of a small town, and for the punchlines that will make you laugh.

Another aspect which had potential to shine is the film’s music. Though there is ample scope for it throughout the film, the songs present in the album don’t make you hit the replay button. Overall, as a director, Jai Basantu Singh makes a confident Bollywood debut but he has a long way to go as the captain of the ship. This one’s a light-hearted film with a strong message which could have been packaged and delivered way better. However, what we get to see is a breezy and witty movie with its intent in the right place.

What makes this film, at least its first half, such good fun is the writing. It’s light and funny, and the characters do their job well, as we see the Bollywood small town (clearly, Chanderi in MP is the new ‘It’ town) in throes of a ‘sasur-bahu’ saga. Post-interval, the film becomes preachy. Condoms are not just for pleasure, says Manokamna to the groups of ladies she goes about addressing, they are also instruments that keep women from unwanted abortions, which in turn prevents untimely tragic deaths. That’s not to say that this is not a valid argument, but it takes a brave-for-Bollywood, let-us-have-some-fun-with-sex flick, and turns it into a lecture.

Be that as it may, Janhit Mein Jaari isn’t a wasted effort. It does have something to say and much of it is definitely in public interest. If only it had found better ways of enunciating its concerns the film would have driven home its point with far greater verve.

These moments of effortless humour are far and few between though, and find themselves mingled in a narrative that is too confused about how much it wants to make us laugh while it informs. There is very little novelty the film offers – both in terms of crafting its narrative or giving us a new insight into a much-discussed issue

Janhit Mein Jaari lives up to the cleverness of its title until it doesn’t. The absurdity always rings truer than the preaching. Before Manokamna discovers her inner activist, the film lines up a bunch of endearingly crackpot characters.
