A joyless ride – lacks fun, laughter, excitement, and freshness… The dated writing is the biggest culprit… Most importantly, the jokes don’t land. Don’t expect much!

I love broad laughs and hare-brained comedies as much as the next person, but whatever happened to keeping it crisp and connected? Bring back Dobriyal, and give him and Sait something to do. Pair Devgn with an age-appropriate leading lady, and give him a few chuckle-worthy lines. Can’t be that hard, can it?

One technician who seems to have had all the fun is DP Aseem Bajaj. Making the most of the scenic locales where the film plays out, he lends Son of Sardaar a veneer of shimmering brightness that once in a while serves to deflect attention away from the banality that runs the film to the ground.

The joyless ride continues with soap opera-level plot developments before concluding in a jarring melodramatic change of tone. Before the whole endeavour wraps up, Rohit Shetty appears out of nowhere and announces the next part of Golmaal.Ajay Devgn smiles, which feels like an apology for the rubbish we just endured in the name of comedy.

Sometimes, I wonder why Bollywood makes such movies? We don’t need star-studded films like Son of Sardaar 2. We need good stories and good craftsmen. Filmmakers need to understand that audiences have evolved, they know what is good cinema and what is bad cinema? They are literate enough to differentiate between the two. So, do not underestimate or take your audiences for granted dear Bollywood. And let me tell you nobody, literally nobody is star-struck.

‘Son of Sardaar 2’ is a clean family entertainer that tries to tick every box – comedy, drama, patriotism, romance – but ends up being an uneven ride. It lacks the magic and madness of the original ‘Son of Sardaar’, and suffers from weak storytelling.

With all said and done, Son of Sardar 2 is a decent watch that you can think of watching at the theatres near you with your family. Though the film tries to give a message at the end, go with a mindset to watch some pure slapstick comedy that doesn’t require you to apply your mind and logic. Lastly, be ready to be surprised for a small announcement in the end, and no, it’s not Son of Sardar 3.

The attention-deficit movie pays its most refreshing characters the least attention. Rabia and her posse feel like they belong together – and in some other movie that might have made better use of their chemistry and willingness for comedy. A radiant-looking Mrunal Thakur and Deepak Dobriyal’s deftly judged transwoman are the most memorable players in a tedious grab bag of a film.

Pulling off a story with such a massive ensemble could easily go wrong with director Vijay Kumar Arora holds the fort with confidence and finesse, he doesn’t losses focus in any scene.
