Dangal. Chhichhore. Now Bawaal… NiteshTiwari is, without doubt, a fantastic storyteller… Bawaal has a refreshingly different plot, well-knit screenplay, several emotional moments and terrific performances [VarunDhawan, JanhviKapoor]… RECOMMENDED! BawaalReview

Twice in Bawaal, featuring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, Varun, who plays a Lucknow school teacher named Ajay, tells other characters, “The idea is a bit revolutionary; please listen with an open mind.” I suspect he is a stand-in for director Nitesh Tiwari instructing his viewers. Because this film definitely requires an open mind. Bawaal doesn’t just need an open mind it also requires a giant suspension of disbelief enormous patience and faith that nitesh the filmmaker who gave us dangal will find a way to make this Preposterous material work but even he can’t do it Bawaal is an epic misfire.

On the whole, Bawaal is a beautiful film which will find huge appreciation on Amazon Prime. No doubt, it will be loved more by the classes than the masses but the fact remains that it is a wonderfully written and excellently made film.

The story of an uncouth braggart undergoing a change of heart in the company of a good woman is an old one. Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Bawaal’ promises us more, by trying to make that arc bigger and deeper, but keeps faltering, never quite knowing what to make of a wholly harebrained flourish in the plot. And that’s a pity, because this film had the potential to be something different.

If not exactly screechy, Bawaal is horribly preachy.Bawaal is as fake as its fibber-hero – a film that masquerades as cinema’s equivalent of an agony aunt who wants to mend a marriage on the brink of annulment even as its larger aim is to deliver a pat truism about man’s inhumanity to man. The exercise, no matter how offbeat it seems, inevitably sinks into a bottomless trench.

Saddled by the weight to be more than just your average romantic drama, Bawaal staggers throughout the duration of the film and ultimately ends on an all too predictable note with nothing new to add to the conversation about either war or love.

While rediscovering love against the backdrop of the World War II is a fresh concept, writers Nitesh, Piyush Gupta, Nikhil Mehrotra, and Shreyas Jain do not have much to offer in terms of the duo’s romantic encounters or Ajay turning into a new leaf. Nisha’s life lessons are done well, such as the real war we fight is looking outward for happiness and our undying greed.

I am not saying that Bawaal is a movie that doesn’t need to be watched. But at the same time, being a Nitesh Tiwari film, I believe that it could have done better. Despite all its drawbacks, one takeaway from the film is that it’s okay to be an average person with imperfections, than to be a fake person.

Bawaal falls well short of perfection, but it never comes unstuck. It passes muster as a wholesome entertainer embellished with humour, warmth, authentic emotional trappings, and actors adept at going seamlessly along with the flow. Just like Varun Dhawan’s character says, ‘Mahul aisa banao, ki logon ko mahul yaad rahe, result nahi. Tiwari surely manages to create the ‘mahul’ and the audience will also remember the results.
