Jersey has an interesting premise + brilliant performance by #ShahidKapoor, but, when viewed in totality, works only in patches… Slow pacing, overstretched narrative, too much cricket [second hour] are deterrents. #JerseyReview

On the whole, Jersey is an entertaining family film which will keep its target audience happy. It may have opened slow but it definitely has the potential to grow by positive word of mouth which will emanate because of the film’s inherent strength and emotional quotient. However, it must be added that the ‘fractured’ release of the film (lesser than optimum number of cinemas and shows due to K.G.F. Chapter 2 (dubbed) going super-strong in single-screen cinemas and multiplexes) will adversely affect the overall business in the final tally.

Thankfully, the emotional drama is heightened and the twist at the end, about what happened to Arjun, will make you tear up. Especially if you are unfamiliar with the original. It’s very likely that if you haven’t seen that, this one will work better for you. But for admirers of Nani’s Jersey like me, this Jersey isn’t fresh or invigorating enough

An emotional end, even if it feels very last-minute, provides the essential drama that a movie like this needs. That, and the message that it’s never too late to make your dreams come true. Overall, though, Jersey comes off sincere but lacklustre.

Even though this is a sports-led drama, you don’t quite encounter too many of those nail-biting, edge-of-the-seat moments, though whatever you see engages you, especially if you have not seen the original. This film leans more on emotional drama, while it could have struck a finer balance between the sports and the human drama. If you’re expecting nail-biting cricketing moments, you’re probably going to be a tad disappointed. But if you’re game for an inspiring and moving father-son story, this one’s totally worth your ticket.

All said and done, Shahid Kapoor continues to add some interesting innings in the second phase of his life, and Jersey is surely one of them. A rare and almost-perfect blend of drama, (predicable-yet-interesting) game & everything else.

Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur starrer Jersey is a fairly solid sports film, underdog take, and family drama all rolled into one, without ever being remarkable, which is expected as it was the same with its carbon-copy original. It should serve more rewards though for those who haven’t seen the Nani film. I’m going with 3.5 out of 5 stars.

“Tu bataa kake, khelun ki nahin khelun?,” a perplexed Arjun asks his son. To this, the kid replies, “Khelo naa papa, dil khol ke khelo. Jab cricket khelte hoon toh ekdum hero lagte hoon.” Shahid Kapoor as an actor treads on a similar path. He makes sure that your heart belongs to his ‘jersey’.

The film gives a sneak peek into a cricketer’s life but more than being a sports film it strikes a perfect balance between sports and human emotions. It imparts strong life lessons in every scene and urges the audience to stand strong and be hopeful no matter how difficult the situation is. For those watching it for the first time, they will definitely love the film, but those watching it again should go with a fresh perspective. In the end, it will leave the audience teary-eyed making Arjun’s character immortal in the minds and hearts of the audience. Overall Jersey is a must-watch film that has all the elements and will make you laugh, cry and cheer throughout.
