Buchi Babu Sana’s maiden film Uppena tells the often told tale of class divide and how it threatens to rip apart two youngsters in love. With films like Dorasaani and Colour Photo also bringing such stories to the forefront, the debutant director does his best to set the film apart. But does he do enough?

On the whole, Uppena is a moving love story with an impressive star cast. Amazing songs, a fresh pairing, and gritty drama are basic assets for this film. Though the story is a bit routine and parts of the second half are routine, the decent narration and hard-hitting climax make this film an impressive watch.

Uppena is a rustic tale that is decently packed with fantastic music, romance and action. The second half has predictable path but climax scores good. Vaisshnav Tej and Krithi Shetty make a dream debut with Uppena which will have a decent box-office run.

Having said all, Uppena rides high on emotions with love at the centre stage. The end justifies the means. Bebamma and Rayanam’s emotional climax thugs heartstrings. It is a decent climax. On the whole, Uppena is watchable. Kudos to the producers for their gutsy attempt and spending lavishly on the newcomers. It is a different attempt and not run-of-the-mill film one gets to watch every Friday.

The love story doesn’t have a unique plot, nor does it have a different conflict point. An upper-caste rich girl falling for a poor low-class boy is a point that we have been seeing for many decades. The girl’s father playing the villain in their story is also a clichéd conflict. “Uppena” does have all these clichés but new director Buchi Babu focuses less on the story, and more on drawing the audience to the village, their culture. These kinds of films rely on the tragic ending, but ‘Uppena’ solely depends on the ‘so called shocking’ twist. If we deduct the twist, the film ends up as a regular love story.
