Bhai Telugu Movie Review

Ratings:2.5/5 Review By: Karthik Pasupulate Site:Times Of India (TOI)

The film tries to juxtapose the goofiness of an Aha Na Pellanta with the stylized action of a gangster flick like say Shadow. The result we’re afraid is a dumbed-down version of Don. Even die hard fans of Nagarjuna will struggle to conjure nice things to say about the movie. It’s a howler all the way, and that is putting it kindly. Note: Its masala gone wrong, save a few funny moments you’re going to have to create your own entertainment to enjoy this one.

The film takes off with some promising locales, hot foreign girls and good premises but Nag gives a scare with his weird hairdo like a Red Indian Chief. From thereon, the story starts dipping rapidly and the twist in the tale before the interval bang was extremely disappointing. It was a relief to see the word ‘interval’ onscreen. The second half again goes with the same morose flavor and it looked as if the main target was to complete the two hour plus duration with anything that comes to mind rather than streamlining it with a purpose.

Unfortunately, Bhai is an ordeal to sit through unless you’re interested in punch lines. Sample a few: ‘He is the King; he takes decisions without discussions’; ‘Bhai tho pettukunte chaavu ki tatkal ticket book chesinatte’; ‘Mafia ki grammar techindi nene, nerpindi nene’; ‘Mafia ane magazine ki Bhai cover story lantivaadu’. The last two perhaps refer to the trend Nagarjuna set with Shiva. We wouldn’t know. But by the time the film ends, you’d be least interested in knowing it too. We just hope we get to see Nagarjuna in better and more deserving films.

His latest offing ‘Bhai’ is a good case study of how a good actor like Nagarjuna can be wasted in an age-old story with equally old-styled screenplay. The movie banks on three things- Nagarjuna, comedy and family sentiment. The first part appears to be a drag, with back-to-back songs interrupting the narration. The heavy dosage of sentiment in the latter half puts you off and as the movie progresses, it turns predictable too. On the whole, the film is a one-time watch for families who have not been to the cinemas much of late. For regular movie-goers though, ‘Bhai’ is just another passable film.

Bhai’ came in with good expectations, riding on the back of a nice audio album from DSP. But the film fails to entertain. Poor screenplay, bad writing and terrible editing spoil the overall viewing experience. Bhai is a disappointment and it ends up as a damp squib.

First half of Bhai is unbearable with story not moving anywhere. Second half starts off with an interesting twist at the interval. There is some story to write about in the second hour. The father-son, sister-brother sentiment scenes are not shot well. There is scope for the director to work out comedy and sentiment in the second half. But he messed it up with poor writing. He has concentrated more on unnecessary stuff like punch dialogues and hero elevation scenes. Those scenes and dialogues are not good too. Hence, the film ended up as a horrible affair that will test anyone. Nagarjuna fans and masses also will be disappointed with this.

Don stories run according to set principles and formula. Bhai movie has all those necessary ingredients. Right from character build up to punch dialogues to stylish presentation, Bhai makes a perfect entry. But later story runs on predictable terms. There are no awe inspiring moments and mind blowing scenes. We expect story to gain mood after shifting to Hyderabad. But it further dulls. We don’t understand why a gang is after Nag. Fights appear to come and go just for fights sake and not because story demands. Bhai would have been a perfect watch if it had come a decade ago. It’s too late now.

First half of the film is very ordinary and predictable. Even interval twist can be predicted. Second half counts on the family background but movie totally goes on the same lines of recent Baadshah. What movie was missing is a heart. Movie just made to cash on Nagarjuna’s family stardom. If the opening sequences had been much simpler and realistic, the film would have been accepted better. Nagarjuna’s Bhai has absolutely nothing to offer to movie lovers. But if at all, fans are expecting for an Diwali bonanza, I am sure this is going to make them pretty disappointed.

One more Don story in Nagarjuna’s kitty. Director Veerabhadram served us the same wine in a new glass. First half of the story dealt with his stylish introduction and mafia backdrop. A small and routine twist which we used to see from our childhood days turned the story from interval bang.Where as in the Second half narration goes through his flash back, family sentiments, sister emotions and finally a fight and an end title card. There is nothing special and new in the story. Bhai movie is a single time watcher
