Vibhu Puri and Pradhant Jha have penned a story which belongs to a different era. The story moves on two tracks. Besides, there are back stories of the lead characters and hence there is enough scope for drama. On the whole, Gustaakh Ishq is a well-made film with lovely performances by the lead actors, but its box-office prospects are weak because it doesn’t have much for the masses. It is like poetry on celluloid.

The trouble with Vibhu Puri’s Gustakh Ishq is not just that it feels much older than its setting of the mid-90 — it could well have been one of those classic Muslim socials so beloved of the 60s and 70s — and not just that it is talky — this is is the kind of film whose dialogues are meant to draw wah-wahi — but that it struggles to make you feel. The music is sublime, the performers make you look, and both needed a better film.

Overall, Gustaakh Ishq meanders and sometimes tests your patience, but rewards you with a world that finds its emotional centre. By the time the credits roll, you’re left with a tale that may not sweep you off your feet, but certainly leaves a warm afterglow.

Gustaakh Ishq bridges the gap between nostalgia and the present, making the right maiden production for Manish Malhotra. The chemistry between the leads feels effortless, more felt than performed. With Vishal Bhardwaj’s enchanting musical score and Gulzar’s deep lyrics, it looks like films like this will soon find a voice again.Filled with soulful shayari, don’t miss watching Vijay Varma- Fatima Sana Shaikh’s Gustaakh Ishq, for it will rekindle your love for classics.

Gustaakh Ishq is a film meant strictly for the die-hard lovers of old-school romance — who still believe in handwritten letters, timid glances, and a love that simmers slowly on winter evenings. For everyone else, it may feel like a beautiful world trapped in its own nostalgia: heartfelt, charming, warm, but also predictable and not always compelling.

Gustaakh Ishq feels like a cinematic revival of everything we once loved about Urdu story-telling.So if you are into literature, poetry and Urdu, and in the mood for a ‘clean’ love story, Gustaakh Ishq is a must watch.

On the whole, GUSTAAKH ISHQ is a sweet and simple film, backed by earnest performances by the lead cast. At the box office, its poor awareness and limited buzz are likely to restrict its reach.

And all three prime actors, Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh move neatly in ambience-appropriate Manish Malhotra clothes while they spout the language of a bygone era that perhaps existed only in Muslim socials. If you’ve the time for words and wounds, go visit the world.
