Rishab Shetty’s story, written jointly with Anirudh Mahesh and Shaneel Gautham, is very exciting and engaging. Some portions are confusing but the overall impact of the story is very forceful. On the whole, Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1 is a surefire hit. It may have started much slower than expected, but positive word of mouth will see collections picking up. Opening: so-so at places and fair at others.…….. Opening was less than expected, considering that the film belongs to a much-loved franchise and also considering that today (October 2) is a festive (Dassera) holiday. However, collections are picking up as the day is progressing.

Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is a manic, sometimes befuddling, mix of history, myth, cinematic craft and performative power. When the disparate components and conceits blend well, it is an undeniably compelling watch.

Despite the lack of a character arc pulling Rishab back from going all out, he delivers an outstanding performance in physically demanding scenes, particularly when he is possessed by Guliga and later by Chamundi in the climax. Although Rukmini appeared as a token female character, the sudden twist in her arc towards the end worked well, thanks in significant part to her ability to rise to the role’s demands. Without resorting to exaggerated portrayal, Rukmini managed to embody the ethos of Kanakavathi with finesse.

On the whole, Kantara: Chapter 1 is a captivating action drama that has a good amount of goosebump-inducing moments. The film will win us over with its standout interval and climax portions, divine elements, jaw-dropping visuals, and mind-boggling VFX. Rishab Shetty is outstanding, while Rukmini Vasanth is solid in a well-written role. The slow pacing at times, dragged-out portions, and the overstuffed scenes with too much information act as the key drawbacks. Nonetheless Kantara Chapter 1 is a theatre-worthy film for its technical brilliance.

Overall, Kantara: Chapter 1 works as a decent prequel. It surpasses the original in scale and visual grandeur, but falls short in narrative engagement and the wow factor. A dull first half weighs it down, but the strong second half redeems it, making it a worthy, if not flawless, addition to the franchise.

Forest politics on a period setup is an interesting one, yet the content feels average due to its scattered screenplay. However the unmatched making, terrific visuals and exhilarating presentation of certain sequences hide the shortcomings.

Overall, Kantara: Chapter 1, has a few issues like unnecessary attempts to include comedy and slow pace at times in the first half. But, quite a few brilliantly executed episodes right from the pre-interval sequence up until the climax, along with an extraordinary performance by Rishab Shetty and a commendable performance by Rukmini Vasanth, particularly in the second half, made the film a very good watch in theatres. It is a film that is made to be experienced on a big screen along with friends and family. In all likelihood, the film is going to do very well at the box office with a very long run in theatres and in all probability, going to get a lot of awards for Rishab Shetty.
