Mohit Suri’s direction is superb. Full marks to him for juxtapositioning modernity with traditional values so beautifully. He has extracted great work out of the two new lead actors.On the whole, Saiyaara is a sureshot super-hit, no questions asked. It will set the box-office on fire.

The story is as old as time. Bad boy meets good girl, sparks fly, and then, there’s heartbreak, sacrifice, and reunion. And, no one does heartbreak like Mohit Suri. This heartbreak is lifted by rock, emo and grunge music, and this is not a complaint.

Films like Rockstar and Aashiqui worked for many reasons, but the most important being the film-makers and storytellers going the extra mile to tell a story that they deemed honest and real. Saiyaara never derives from that truthful soul and ends up being a bland rehash of old ideas served in an older bottle.

The plot tries to touch upon the socially-mediated aspects of a popular rockstar’s life, but gets over-run by the flailings of faceless band members, except for the one who gets all the lines, as well as some prettified portions shot by the sea and in the mountains.Result: what could have been a bitter-sweet love story, and that’s what the film is clearly going for, is done in by its dialogue-heavy, inconsistent bits.

What keeps Saiyaara afloat is how two new faces submit to the vision of a filmmaker despite the messiness and imperfection of the narrative. What also holds the film together is the stunning title track even if the other songs may not have the lasting legacy of Suri’s previous works. It may not have the gorgeousness of the other love stories, but it may drag its feet, but the intent and inherent sincerity make up for it. Because when is love ever perfect?
