Engaging in parts with some brilliantly executed sequences… Lengthy first half, uneven, slow-paced second half… Inconsistent writing is a flaw… ShahidKapoor is outstanding, among his best works. DevaReview

Roshan Andrews’ direction is alright but his narration targets the class audience mainly. Also, his narration gets confusing at times. Vishal Mishra’s music is good. The Bhasad song is mass-appealing.On the whole, Deva is too class-appealing to make any impact at the ticket windows. It will prove to be a flop show.Opening: dull. …….Also released all over.

Mercifully, such gaps aren’t the rule in Deva. The plot amendments that provide the film with a new run-up to the climax and the final denouement serve the purpose of keeping the audience guessing. So, even if you remember the Malayalam film and know how it winds up, Deva has something in store for you. It is a Shahid Kapoor show all the way but Deva certainly isn’t only for fans of the star.

It’s been a while since Bollywood delivered a masala action entertainer that strikes the right balance — thrilling but not overindulgent, stylish yet not hollow. The kind where high-octane action meets a brooding, effortlessly cool protagonist, vengeance fuels every move, and the plot is simple enough to keep your brain on cruise control. Of course, the genre’s usual tropes remain — power-packed dialogues, gravity-defying stunts, and female characters who, unfortunately, orbit the hero’s journey rather than shaping their own.

That said, the film isn’t without flaws. The narrative has several loopholes and moments that feel unconvincing—a sniper shot, for instance, seems far-fetched. Some loose ends remain unexplained (avoiding spoilers here). Dev’s childhood hardships and his motivation to become a cop to arrest his abusive father are referenced multiple times but never fully explored. The overall pace remains slow, yet it manages to keep you engaged and entertained. The film has inconsistencies, however, its intensity, raw appeal, and slick execution make it worth a watch.

I blame the current and frustrating fetish of the audience to watch ‘Mass’ cinema that we glorify flawed people and their perverted understanding of machoism. They wanted to be firm that this was not a remake of the Malayalam thriller. Or maybe the leading man wasn’t comfortable in essaying a queer. Maybe the makers wanted to give a more stylized and bronzed look to Dev-A. Style hai babu Bhaiyaa makers ka style. No points for guessing which film comes to mind.

Deva has everything—action, emotion, a gripping plot, and a hero worth rooting for. While it’s not without its flaws, the film is a must-watch for Shahid Kapoor fans and anyone who enjoys a well-rounded, thrilling cinematic experience. Andrrews’ direction, combined with Shahid’s stellar performance, ensures that Deva will leave a lasting impression. Don’t go in expecting Kabir Singh—this is a different Shahid Kapoor, one who’s evolved and excels in a role that’s as memorable as it is impactful.

While the film celebrates its heroic cop, it doesn’t shy away from critiquing the very institution Dev represents. Despite the flaws, Deva is a slow-paced and engaging investigative thriller.

Shahid Kapoor’s Deva clearly disappoints despite having potential. However, the film ends on a note that opens the gates for a second part, and knowing the filmmaker in Rosshan, one can expect something positive. However, as for the first part, the film is an average one-time watch with a few highs.
