Sanchit Gupta and Priyadarshee Srivastava have written a story which bears a striking resemblance to the already released Janhit Mein Jaari. The duo’s story and screenplay have comedy, but they are, nevertheless, not very engrossing. On the whole, Chhatriwali is an average fare but its chances to appeal to the audience are even lesser because of its story resembling Janhit Mein Jaari which itself was a flop.

Just a few months back, we had Nushhratt Bharuccha doing almost the same thing in ‘Jan Hit Mein Jaari’. But the same problem that beset ‘Jan Hit’ overpowers this one too: why should any conversation around condoms and safe sex lead to tired, jaded lines about how these are ‘ashleel’ things, not only not appropriate for young boys and girls, but also in bedrooms where ‘respectably’ married couples presumably engage in mutually pleasurable copulation? Why, in the guise of being progressive, is the treatment of the film so backward? Why so coy? Is this the 60s?

But in trying to fit its public service objectives within rom-com cliches, Director Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar can neither convey the hypocrisy of society nor address why sex shouldn’t be treated as taboo. The jury is still out on Chhatriwali’s flimsy public service, but Rakul sure passes the quality check.

Chhatriwali might end on a euphoric note with the regressive characters finally understanding the importance of these things but we know we have a long way to go before this fiction turns into a reality. Till then, we can take inspiration from films and try to wonder – what is so shameful about safe sex practices or knowledge about the changes one’s body goes through that we either dismiss it as a joke or sweep it under the carpet.

After Aparshakti Khurana’s Helmet (2019), Nushrratt Bharuccha’s Janhit Mein Jaari (2022), Chhatriwali is the latest addition to these social dramas that uses humour to deliver a perspective message about the taboo subjects like “contraceptives” and “safe sex”. Overall, it’s a light-hearted film that is predictable and could have been packaged and delivered more creatively and uniquely. Despite this, Chhatriwali is watchable with the right intent.

Chhatriwali starring Rakul Preet Singh, Sumeet Vyas, Satish Kaushik, Dolly Ahluwalia, and Rajesh Tailang, writers Sanchit Gupta and Priyadarshee Srivastava are so keen to make their Let’s-talk-about-sex messaging land that the plot slowly veers into the absurd

Overall, Chhatriwali is a decent one-time watch but unfortunately, it doesn’t have a long-lasting effect. Rakul Preet Singh starrer can be watched due to its intriguing story but the execution has nothing new to offer. Chhatriwali becomes very predictable from the start, taking out the fun to watch the film.

Chhatriwali is not one of those preachy Bollywood films that only talks about an important societal issue. It tries to be entertaining and humourous but poorly fails in that too. The film is filled with patriarchal and sexist remarks, below-the-belt humour and dialogues that will make you cringe for real. Chhatriwali is a confused film as it doesn’t stick to its subject and absolutely leaves no impact
