Khaali Peeli is essentially a 2.0 version of Sadak. Once again, a taxi driver rescues a young woman from a brothel, which is run by a dreaded villain. Khaali Peeli as a “traditional Hindi film, a mainstream potboiler.” But because it’s 2020, we get self-aware masala. So in the first few minutes, the hero makes a slow-motion entry, feet first, smokes a cigarette with style and tells us, in voice-over, that his life is like a Bollywood masala film and only two things really matter – tashan and emotion. For the next two hours, we get plenty of tashan but little else.But despite his best efforts, Khaali Peeli doesn’t become more than wannabe masala.

And that’s really what this film does, overall. Khaali Peeli knows that it needs to refresh the tropes it is up against, and manages to do so only some of the time in its two-hour duration. As a pandemic time-pass, it serves. Just about.

All said and done, Khaali Peeli is your typical Bollywood popcorn-munching, snack-binging movie. It’s a first one in this zone for a long time, and for that, it should be seen taking a break from the heavy atmosphere around. Watch or Not?: If you’re investing 299 to watch it, then don’t. If you’re waiting for it to come under the premium Zee5 plan, then yes!

On the whole, KHAALI PEELI rests on a wafer-thin plot and is riddled with a lot of cinematic liberties, thus diluting the impact. Moreover, the decision to release the film on a pay-per-view model, that too at an exorbitant price, might go against the film.

Khaali Peeli is an entertainment package with satisfactory dose of action, comedy and drama. Thematically, it revisits ‘masala’ Bollywood crowd pullers and even tries to carve a new space. Ishaan Khatter and Ananya Panday’s fresh pairing is promising and they keep up well with the offbeat and unpredictable scheme of things and deliver a winner.

By the end of Khaali Peeli, I had survived so many flashbacks and had so little fun, the only thing that still made sense is its title. It’s the sort of baloney that recycles every done-to-death stereotype of the masala genre in the most lacklustre manner, be it the clichéd firing of bullet by the baddie, camera focusing on shocked expressions of the leads while third party intervention ensures all’s well that ends well or how the hero and heroine always find a costume friendly revelry as refuge to escape the villain’s sidekicks.
