The Russos, Marcus and McFeely want to root the action in emotion. But the connective tissue between the set-pieces is painfully thin. The characters and motivations – Gentry must rescue a young girl with a medical ailment – have more than a touch of cliché about them. But we’re not here for depth. We’re here for what Mumbaiwallas call time-pass, and mostly, The Gray Man delivers that.

In India, especially Tamil Nadu, Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man, now on Netflix after a short theatrical run, will hold a special attraction because of actor Dhanush. But he has just a minuscule role of about 15 minutes in the film’s runtime of two hours. It is just a wink, but he does make a mark. In the final analysis, The Gray Man comes as a shallow piece of celluloid work which hardly goes beyond gun duels and bouts of desperate fights that get awfully jaded much before midway.

Bottomline: This is a decent one-time watch if you keep your expectations in half, but could have done so much more with a leaner narrative and some editing in the second part.

Both Gosling and Evans feel game for a much bolder movie, however the Russos play it safe in a movie that mistakes loudness for scale. Unfortunately, with the Mission Impossible series or a franchise like John Wick that celebrates its own flimsiness, the stakes for the action blockbuster have been raised. The Gray Man exists somewhere strictly in the middle of all this. It’s the prime fault of a film that mistakes the “gray” for ambiguity, when it’s actually just plain dull.

The Gray Man is certainly worth checking out for anyone remotely interested in the story, cast or filmmakers. Because of the excellently executed action scenes, those who are able would do well with watching The Gray Man in theaters as it heightens the experience. At the very least, it’s definitely recommended to watch The Gray Man on the biggest screen possible, even for those who view the movie after its streaming release on Netflix. Between the Russos behind the camera and the talent in front of it, The Gray Man is a fun and exciting action thriller. It may be in the vein of cheesy 80s and 90s action movies, but that makes The Gray Man all the more entertaining and rewatchable.

It all adds up to a film that’s a blast throughout. Netflix may still be in search of awards season glory, but the streamer has finally shown that it can make tentpole entertainment as well as the big boys. You won’t see many more purely entertaining movies this summer.

The Gray Man” is the payoff of Gosling’s low-key reinvention: an incredibly expensive, stunningly executed action vehicle in which he plays Six, an ex-con-turned-CIA assassin who’s so good at his job that he becomes a kind of liability, landing him at the top of the agency’s kill list.

And that’s really it for two hours. Good guy, bad guy, woman in the middle, kid in jeopardy, things go boom. Some of the action sequences, especially an insane one in a town square, can be pretty effective, but most of the film is shot at such a bizarrely low light that it dulls even the incredible screen presence of the undeniably charismatic Gosling, Evans, and de Armas.
