The film’s runtime is another plus, as it wraps up in much less than two hours, dishing out all its stylish and violent offerings. But in the end, ‘The Protégé’ scores due to its high pedigree and seasoned hands that know how to engage their audience, even if they are not die-hard action fans.

Once upon a time, about a decade ago, action star Maggie Q scored big with the TV series Nikita. Q, whose fame as a global action star continues to rest on the show, revisits the template with The Protégé, a film that blindly echoes the Nikita plot about an orphan kid being shaped into a brutal assassin, who eventually becomes the archetypal avenging angel. The outcome is jaded, and Q’s latest could seem like a discarded draft for a new season of the series that never did take off.

Director James Foley’s return to the director’s chair is old-school in its approach, but it works well enough with the material at hand. The film explores an unusual chemistry between characters, whether it’s Moody and Anna’s father-daughter dynamic or the sultry flirtation between them. In a way, it’s a shame that The Protégé is the last job for most of its ensemble. With any luck, it will inspire others to recognize Q’s action star abilities.
