On the whole, Governor is an entertaining thriller which will greatly appeal to the classes and city audience as also the youth. It may start slow but the jump in collections will be supremely perceptible once the word of mouth spreads. In some circuits, the film could prove to be a hit!

As befits propaganda films in the same vein as ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, the story-telling is as basic as it can get, with clunky computer graphics replacing actual vistas. No one blinks when the governor himself leads a cat-and-mouse game as he goes about fixing traffic snarls and readying planes for the precious cargo. There’s more where this came from, making ‘Governor’ a perfect fit for these times when people are willing to believe anything.

Bajpayee’s magnificently modulated performance cannot undo the effects of all the mendacity that sweeps through the film. It must surely rank as one of the actor’s greatest performances in the aid of a lost cause. If you like screen acting that is so effortless that it does not look like acting at all, you might want to give this film a shot.But be mindful, there is a price to be paid for that joy: a two-hour history lesson that nobody asked for.

The best part of the film is not what will happen — the title and trailer make that clear — but the how. Bringing a love story to a time when audiences have become accustomed to celebrating hatred and othering is itself an act of rebellion, even a political gesture. Imtiaz Ali, along with Naseeruddin Shah and Diljit Dosanjh, breaks your heart to mend it again.

Ultimately, Governor is a film about a government taking difficult decisions to stabilise an economy three-and-a-half decades ago. Those events undoubtedly deserve historical recognition. But recognition alone does not make compelling cinema. Art is supposed to ask questions, challenge assumptions and provoke debate.Ironically, Governor leaves audiences with plenty of questions. The problem is that none of them are the questions the film itself seems interested in asking.
