Harish Dinkar’s story is pathetic and ridiculous — and that’s putting it mildly. The screenplay, written by Pankaj Kumar, is so terrible that it could win an award for the worst screenplay. Pankaj Kumar seems to know nothing about screenplay writing because although the film is a comedy, there’s not a single scene which evokes genuine laughter. The screenplay serves to bore and irritate the viewers because every comic punch falls flat on its face. On the whole, Velle is a disaster which will find it difficult to complete even a day’s run in cinemas.

Director Deven Munjal has chosen an interesting subject from the South to remake in Hindi. However, like its inspiration, the modified version isn’t flawless. The first half seems to be taking the film’s title too seriously and is a little too ‘chilled out’ and meandering. It’s only at the interval point when more things happen, and the movie moves into higher gear. And the second half more than makes up for the ‘vellapanti’-filled first and also keeps you glued to the screen proceedings even though you half-anticipate them.To sum up, Velle has some good moments. But one can’t help wishing the first half played out better, instead of making the post-interval part look like a different movie altogether.

The 2019 crime comedy, Brochevarevarura, is among the most loved films of Telugu cinema and was primarily appreciated for its non-linear narrative. Adapting it in any language was always going to be a task. Deven Munjan’s Hindi adaptation gets lost in translation and what comes out as the final product is a disjointed tale of friendship, crime and comedy.

There are three different parallel narratives running in the story at the same time, and eventually, all of them collide with one another to make an epic colossal comedy of errors. ‘Velle’ is a clean family entertainer that is hilarious and well-crafted. A roller-coaster ride filled with laughter and emotions, the film deserves to be seen on the big screen.

Overall, apart from comedy Velle also has a twist of thrill which is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. The film will remind you of old Bollywood situational comedies like Bhagam Bhag that got in plenty of laughs. The Deol comedy special makes for a refreshing watch on a leisure day.

A remake of a Telugu film, ‘Velle’ is choc-a-bloc with twists and turns, and just when you think you have got the hang of the plot, a lot more unravels. It is a clean family entertainer that is hilarious and well-crafted.The makers did not quite explore Abhay Deol’s character. He gets limited time on-screen; had he got more, his performance would have been more impactful. Still, it is a film you cannot afford to miss.
