Staying well within popcorn entertainer boundaries, the film is self-aware and doesnt take itself too seriously, just like Ryan Reynolds. That said, Free Guy is an unabashed showcase of his onscreen talents. Ever since his role as Deadpool, theres a specific blend of comedy and action weve come to expect from his films. Free Guy has a premise tailor-made to his brand, and the bankable star has a blast with it. Filled with satisfying gags and dazzling action mixed with a dash of warmth, this is a highly enjoyable movie that makes the most of its cast and leading man, in particular.

However, corny missteps like that one are a rarity for Free Guy, which also benefits from a couple of enterprising cameos, including a hilarious one by Channing Tatum. Stylish, confident and exuberant in its humour, Disneys latest is the kind of surefire blockbuster that will have both cinema-goers and cinema-owners smiling from ear to ear.

All said and done, Free Guy at its core is a simple, breezy video game movie that ends in a blink without making much noise, but it comes with a lot of exploration to be done under the base. The motto of we can do whatever we want is sewed beautifully into the intriguing sub-plots of the film, you just have to read between the lines.

For its fans, Free Guy will be a nice-enough moviegoing experience, but at a time when the industry is literally on the verge of collapsing in on itself, we need to be more demanding as paying members of the audience. And Ryan Reynolds needs to take more chances.
