On the whole, Laila Majnu has a weak second half which will mar its box-office prospects. Lack of popular songs and a weak lead cast will also tell on its box-office performance. In the final tally, it will prove to be a flop.

Director Sajid Ali may not be as insightful as his celebrated filmmaker brother, but he surely folds up his sleeves in conveying the madness and mayhem synonymous with what it means to be a ‘Majnu’. And the sequence that covers the lead’s progressive deterioration triggered by unrequited love is the best part of this otherwise sloppy story. It is the character’s shocking transformation that does salvage the lazy writing but the rest doesn’t size up.

This is a love story of extremes and at times, the parts of the film do seem a bit unbelievable. When you’re retelling a classic tragedy about undying and unrequited love like ‘Laila Majnu’, you can’t expect bubble-gum romance. Sajid’s effort is achingly honest and it is visible throughout the film. In his first film, he takes a very deep look at romance and there’s definitely no space for frivolity here. With all its intensity and passion, it’s a good break from breezy romcoms and one that will stir emotions within.

There is only one true love in this film, and that is what Imtiaz Ali surely has for brother Sajid. For, no one goes from a dud called Jab Harry Met Sejal to a bigger dud like Laila Majnu but for some true brotherly love. Unless it is the lack of ideas. Jab Harry Met Sejal married the titles of one of Hollywood’s most effervescent romances, and that of Imtiaz Ali’s best work. Laila Majnu goes back more than 2,000 years.

Their take on the two lovelorn modern-day boy and girl had to be given a embellishment to some extent, but too many songs and taking a detour from the love that is fabled and celebrated, should have been a little more imaginative. Wish director Sajid were more uninfluenced by big brother Imtiaz!

Misogyny and lack of originality are a lethal combination. The clichéd manner in which Laila and Qais’ relationship is established makes it hard to buy into their later devotion to each other. Qais’ ultimate descent into hell is marked by some excellent acting from Tiwary, but by then it is too late for the film. Personally, I found myself more intrigued by Laila’s equation with her emotionally manipulative father than with her boyfriend.Dear Sajid and Imtiaz, from the space in your minds where that came from, why could you not have thought up a more credible, imaginative adaptation of Laila Majnu? Why?

Laila Majnu has a fair bit of this. Directed by Sajid Ali from a script by his illustrious brother Imtiaz Ali, here is a romantic drama that has the capacity to surprise. This is no small feat considering we have known of the age-old Persian legend about the star-crossed lovers for longer than we can remember, and it has been interpreted by artists as far removed as Rishi Kapoor, Orhan Pamuk and Eric Clapton. It is about young lovers torn apart by their families and the world, till they lose their minds and their lives.

The madness called as Avinash Tiwary, songs speak louder than dialogues, Imtiaz Ali’s writing & a fact that love is such a vast ground to explore – Imtiaz always finds a new corner presenting it in a beautiful way! This is such a movie, you’ll either watch it or don’t & if you watch it you’ll not need a loo break because you’ll get in knowing what to expect.Watch or Not?: Please do not watch it because I’ve rated high, watch it only if you can connect to whatever I mention in the review. This isn’t for normal people!
