Acting is pretty bad too. A bad script could have been saved to an extent by a good lead actor. Vin Diesel is not by any stretch of imagination a good actor. His attempts to emote and look threatening are equally comical. John Cena, who was superb in James Gunn’s recent The Suicide Squad, is made to play a villain so generic that it is out of place even in a Fast and Furious movie.

Action star Vin Diesel and director Justin Lin: what else can they bring to the Fast & Furious franchise? Going strong for 20 years now, the franchise has seen just about everything in terms of physics-defying vehicular stunts: a blinding array of drifts, floats, skids, jumps and so on, since the first movie released back in 2001. And it’s all great fun to watch, especially if you’re a confirmed action movie junkie. Nobody expects much from the film’s other areas; nobody expects to remember a line of dialogue or much by the way of character development. As a racetrack colleague reminds protagonist Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) early on in F9, “We’re all stuck together doing laps in this circle”.

On the whole, FAST AND FURIOUS 9 is a decent, time pass entertainer which will be loved by the masses and the fans of the series. However, the long length, a comparatively unexciting first half and the prolonged lockdown for cinemas in Maharashtra would affect the box office collections in the long run.

F9 is bloated beyond belief, to the point that it seems it has eaten a tandoori platter in record time and is now belching in your face. This is forgivable; many films bite off more than they can chew. But for it to be boring as well is absolutely unpardonable. Years from now, F9 will settle into its position as the Fast franchise’s forgotten entry — Rock-less, ridiculous, and ultimately irredeemable.

Vin Diesel and John Cena put up a balanced performance, neither outshining the other. The rest of the veteran star cast with their superb on-screen chemistry are clearly at home in their roles and they seem to be having a great time delivering their chops.On the production front, the set pieces are big and outlandish. The action sequences, including the delightfully destructive car chase involving magnets et al, are perfunctory in design. Though every frame is flamboyant and blockbuster in appearance, and is layered with surgical precision, the film fails to deliver an awe-inspiring feel.

Fast and Furious 9 Story:
In 1989, Jack Toretto participates in a late model race, with his sons Dominic and Jakob in his pit crew. Dom argues with rival racer Kenny Linder about his dirty tactics. As the race resumes, Linder’s car clips Jack’s bumper and causes the car to hit a wall and explode, killing him. After the crash, Dom is arrested after nearly beating Linder to death. While serving his sentence, he recalls that Jakob had worked on Jack’s car the day he died, and concludes that Jakob killed their father. Upon release, Dom confronts and challenges Jakob to a race, forcing him to leave town when he loses.
