BloodyDaddy isn’t a perfect or flawless film, but it has its moments that make you overlook the blemishes, besides keeping you hooked… What grabs your attention – apart from some expertly-crafted action scenes – is the way the plot unfolds… And, yes, ShahidKapoor is top notch in an action avatar too.

The film is based on French film Nuit Blanche. Ali Abbas Zafar and Aditya Basu have written a fast-paced, taut story and screenplay about the predicament of a father whose son has been kidnapped because he has in his possession the drugs consignment belonging to a drugs dealer. The drama engages the viewers right from the word ‘go’ and keeps them involved all through because of the many turns and twists. On the whole, Bloody Daddy is a well-made entertainer. Its presentation, performances and background score are its major plus points.

Bloody Daddy is not about finesse if you’re looking for a more nuanced story

Bloody Daddy is about corrupt cops, undercover agents, drug peddlers and moles going for the jugular and ending up on all fours, a state that reflects the fate of the film as a whole. It scampers and stumbles its way through orchestrated chaos aimed at hitting the highs of visceral energy. So, is Bloody Daddy a bloody mess? Not quite. But it isn’t a full-blooded affair either.

More than anything else, an actioner unfolding over 24 hours needs to gallop along at break-neck speed. Bloody Daddy, a remake of the French language Nuit Blanche, which in turn was adapted in Tamil as ‘Thoonga Vanam’ starring Kamal Hasan, has all the ingredients of a pacey thriller. But, despite the occasional burst, it slumps back into a been-there-seen-this category, and that’s got a lot to do with its run-time of over two hours, flattening a plot that isn’t as unpredictable as it thinks it is.

This seems to be one of those films that got made just because a star was available and so a decent budget could be drummed up — not too high because most of it is shot at one location. No time to write a script, most of the American and Korean films are taken, so hey, here’s this 2011 French film that will work. How to update? Throw in COVID references. Genius!

Even though Bloody Daddy doesn’t offer the audience elements that they’ve never seen before, the film definitely stands out in the sea of action thrillers. It’s high on thrill, action and full of Shahid Kapoor! Also, that extra 0.5 for his hotness.

You will like Bloody Daddy for the same reason you may have liked Brad Pitt’s action comedy ‘Bullet Train’ or the Coen brothers’ distinctive dark comedies. It’s daft, deranged, dramatic and hilarious. The second half however feels a tad static as action overshadows humour. The plot is quite predictable as well. Bloody Daddy doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s an absurdly funny, unpretentious action- crime thriller that’s brutal and brave.

If you want to unwind after a tiringly long week and blow off steam, Bloody Daddy is the option. It is light, breezy, fun, fizzy and pleasing to the eyes. Our biggest complaint remains, a spectacle film of this scale and elaborate canvas deserved a theatrical release. Who wouldn’t want to watch the enigmatic and good looking duo of Shahid Kapoor and Rajeev Khandelwal locking horns with one another on a 70mm screen?

Bloody Daddy deserves a watch and several times. Despite the remake era in Bollywood pulling down the standards, Bloody Daddy doesn’t disappoint at all. Instead, it takes you on a rollercoaster ride which by the end of the movie, will leave you hooting and eventually pull you back in the queue for another ride. Shahid Kapoor is ace, Ronit Roy is fab and Rajeev Khandelwal is amazing! Going with 4.5 stars.

Bloody Daddy tries to possess a certain amount of madness to keep the momentum going. It’s like that car whose driver is enjoying his rashness, taking all the bumpiness in between, and reaching the finishing line all battered and bloody. Not sure if he’s yet to become a daddy.
